im trying to accomplish building a SQ daily driver, and a one note wonder SPL car all in one. im pretty set on the SPL portion of the vehicle, just waiting for my tax return. as for the SQ, im still looking into different things. i have NO knowledge what so ever of what equipment does well in SQ contests, but i would like to be somewhat competitive in those contests too. ill take any suggestions you guys have.

vehicle: 1993 mazda mx-3 hatchback

HU: originally wanted the panasonic ghost, but i figure alpine/eclipse/nakamichi will do better in the SQ comps

SPL:

subwoofer: 15" treo CSX

amps: 2 - visonik V900HC 3200watts@ 1 ohm

box: i have 11.75CF of internal space available total...not including displacement, or ports

power supply: 2 batteries

the batteries are devoted solely to those amps (1 batt/1amp) to provide current for burps when the car is off. will 2 batteries be enough? i have no problem with charging them as often as needed. just need enough juice to make it through a competition.

SQ:

front fill: 6.5" CL61a

rear fill: nada

amps: visonik v400hc 150watts@ 1ohm x 2

subs: 8 RE8s

amp:visonik V600HC 1000watts @ 1ohm

box: sealed 5.15CF single chamber enclosure

well, several people have told me that they do their rated power...and i can find them all over the place at a great price. im open to any suggestions you have for amps with a better dollar/watt ratio

well im powering a CSX...im going to need alot more power than 1500 watts

but im not doubting hifonics, ive ran them in a previous car. badass amps....i just need more wattage

yeah i know...cant beat $350 just going through the headunits stats, and im trying to find anything negative about it. its all japanese to me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/help.gif.cee8f684da1ba626487a8bc51152e1ec.gif

If only the Platinum 2000 had a removable face...I'd buy it and compare it to my CD-400. borntorun, putting together a SQ system requires more than good equipment. I don't compete or plan to, but I think the judges judge your SQ according to how your system sounds. I think that one of the biggest improvements, if not the biggest, that you can do for an in-car SQ setup is SPEAKER PLACEMENT. Keep good imaging, depth, musicality, and a great reproduction of your CD collection in mind when putting together a SQ system. Some build custom kick pods for equalizing the speaker distances, some add tweeters up front reflecting off the windshield to raise and center the soundstage, some lower their subwoofer x-over point to get an bass up-front effect: just play around and experiment. As long as your equipment isn't total trash, you can get a good sounding system without spending TOO MUCH. But if you're after the an all out SQ competition system...........

cmpx has a good handle on the SQ but I will add, If you are serious about having a comp level system. you are going to be spending hours in show rooms looking for the right sound out of every piece of equipment that you think you may want to use. I am a Pioneer fan so hear are the pieces I want to use.

Deck: Dex-P9 Maybe with the Deq unit maybe not depends on how it sounds without.

Speakers are a little harder because there are only a few high end dealers in Western Washington. but these are my Piks. Pioneer Prs tweets mids and 1 12" sub.

Focal Utopia s (probably not going to happen way outta my price range and wifey has to approve) , CDT HD 642, or the ID s CXS 64 comps. and kicking around the Idea of Dynaudio

Amps: ADS, ARC audio, PPI, or maybe PG's TI line

That covers the basics of equiptment. Not all are high end but all have been used and have had god results in comps. But to put together a car by myself after I have all the equiptment I figure It will take me 6 months or better to get the car prepped and another 6 months to complete the install the way I want it done with all the testing on pink meter and computer with all the expensive hardware.

Good luck and I hope you have help, and are not nearly so picky as I am about what I want to use.

Mike

well i know that its going to take me over a year to get everything i want installed, and running the way i want it. i know the basics of fiberglass, so i can fiberglass what kick pods i need. other than that, im here to read...but there arent many posts that i find about all out SQ.

I'm going to tell you what my SQ fanatic friend told me. 4-way setup: Sub, midbass, midrange, tweeter. Buy good drivers that play well on and off-axis and smoothly past their operating range. Try to position ALL of them in the front of the car, it helps out with imaging. If you can't custom fit your sub in the front, cross it over very low, the crossover point is dependent on your midbass driver's low frequency playing capabilities...so it's up to your ears to tune them and make the bass appear to come from your midbass drivers. The same applies to the mids and tweeters. Try to get your music to appear as though they're coming from one point: reversing polarity, reflecting off a solid surface, digitally time delaying...whatever it takes to get a great sound. Some ideal places to position your drivers are: doors for midbass, kick-panel or above dash for midrange, and above dash for tweeters. You can try other places as well, but they might be more difficult to approach. As for what kind of drivers you should buy, my suggestion: the Danish speaker manufacture Vifa. They have very affordable drivers that perform very well in and out of cars. You can buy "already tuned" component speakers from reputable car audio manufactures as well, but they are a little pricey and not very fun to work with if you ask me. Parts-Express has a lot of Vifa drivers, and has a great tech support that you can easily contact if needed. They also carry Audax, Scan-speak, Focal just to name a few. Madisound, Speaker-city, E-speakers are also very good suppliers of speakers. BTW...invest in a good active crossover and EQ to help out when you're tuning.
