Splitting slot port height for brace

I'm building a large box for two 18s for the trunk of a cadillac. The box is gonna be 9 cubes net with a 9 inch wide port.

With the port being so wide and the side of the box acting as the port wall, it seems like it will need to be braced. Can I use a piece of mdf and split the port directly in the middle at its height?

Will that affect tuning? It will make my port 3/4" shorter which would affect it I would assume. How does everyone else brace a wide port so the outside port wall doesn't flex?

From what I understand, splitting the port all the way is essentially the same thing as having two ports. You have to also consider the extra friction this new wall will add, thus changing your tuning even more.

Mostly everyone uses some type of dowel, or metal rod spanning the gap secured on either side of the port walls. I'd think something like that would have a minimal effect on the tuning.
