in a stock system when you "crank" the music up and it sounds like azz is that from the head unit not bein able to send a clear signal that loud. (thus needing an amp) or is it from the stock speakers not being able to play that loud. (thus needing new speakers) or is it somewhat both?

To title your thread "specific question", this may be the most unspecific question I have seen on this site. We have no way of knowing what HU you have, what kind of car you have, etc.

It could be the Head Unit clipping, It could be the speakers quality, It could be the EQ settings, It could be the quality of the HU, it could be the placement and or wiring of the speakers...

The list is quite long.
