speakers just stopped working

ok i got two pioneer speakers that were just sitting around my house and put them in and they worked for about a month and then at the same time both of them stopped working accept the tweeters in the middle. so then i put in another set and they work fine, what could have happened?

i havnt done anything to blow them i have a sub so they never get distortion and when i move the cone i get no scratching noise
