Speakers go out when music is loud

A couple months ago my buddy put some new speakers in my truck for me. When i play music close to the highest volume it sometimes cuts out and sounds like the speakers are blown. When i turn my ipod off and back on a play it, it plays fine for about another minute than does it again. Other times i can play the music as loud as i want and it doesnt cut out and sounds good the whole time. Any ideas to as of whats wrong?

are they powered by the headunit or an external amp?

Sounds like they the impedance of the speakers could be too low for the headunit.
