speakers for front soundstage

Hi all, looking for speaker recomendations for my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limmited with the infinity gold stock stereo. It has 6x9 door speakers and 2.5 inch dash speakers, these can be modified to take a 3.5 inch. Stock stereo has to go!!!! Have been into car audio since the old school days, lol . But when the kids came along the stereo had to wait, now there are so many companys that are no longer around , got bought out and are junk,ect...

So help me with some options with speakers for my build, Should i go with componets and forget about the 3.5 inch openings in the dash and go with a set of 6.5 components or go with stock speaker size full range? The budgets not big @ $200 for the front speakers. Planning on 6.5 inch 3 ways for rear fill and a pair of 12s in the back.sorry for the long post! SQ is #1 SPL is #2 :)

I had Dodge Nitro, had 3.5" in my dash also and I found a set of American Bass sq3.5" coaxials and they sounded great on amped power. I say def fill those 3.5" holes with something, it gives great imaging for sound. Then I'd do a comp sent in your doors or even 6.5" coaxial. Focal has good speakers even their entry level stuff sounds better than a lot out there that's more mainstream. Hell I ran Morel 6c 2-way 6.5" also and they sounded great and can be had for 100$ a set and those American Bass sq3.5" speakers go for around 40-50$ a set all online.

you'll want to boost your budget a bit. new front speakers need to be accompanied by an amp to power them. you can get a 2-way component set for around $200 and just ditch the dash mids (or someday add mids for a 3-way system). don't waste money on rears right now - focus your entire speaker budget on the front. if SQ is #1 then just buy one 12" sub now and put more money into the front soundstage. especially if your plans didn't include an amp for the front speakers.

only after you have the front sounding as good as you can do you start looking to the other parts of the system. a good substage is important but too much bass and not enough music isn't going to sound good. sounding good and being loud takes a lot of effort and attention to detail.

i recently put a "budget SQ" system in the wife's Camry (factory 6x9 in the doors, 2" in the dash). it sounds really good with a HU, amp and component set. the amp and comp set were both purchased used for under $200 total. you can see the effort into the front speakers here:

http://www.caraudio.com/forums/car-audio-build-logs-cars-trucks-suvs/611961-2002-camry-basic-sq-khas-wife.html

that effort is why the system sounds great. install is paramount for SQ, regardless of what you use.

my build logs (links in sig) show how serious i am about front speakers. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yes i plan to amp the front speakers,no headunit that i can afford can put out great sound and volume ! Lol, thanks for the replys guys,i looked at one of your build threads on a honda , great work, not just a slap and play install!

good deal on the plans. buying a used component speaker system let's you stretch your dollar farther.

@trumpet can make some suggestions for both 2-way and 3-way systems.

you can see in my 2001 Accord build that I experimented with budget 3-way systems using raw drivers and running active. i had good success for the money. brands like Dayton, Vifa, Scanspeak, Morel, Peerless, etc. are available from Parts Express and Madisound. but plan on running active (using an amp with active-capable crossovers - meaning they are adjustable HP/BP/LP up to 5kHz).

Thanks guys for all the help so far. So i have a list of some speakers that im looking at,

Cadence

zrs6km $109

Or

Cwm6kit $64 kind of on the real cheap side!

Morel

Maximo6 $199 kinda on the high side!

Massive audio

Rk611 $132

Polk audio

Db6501 $118 seems to have great reviews online

Mb quart

Pvi216 $169 like the looks of the crossover and the fact u can bi amp these ,but a abs plastic speaker basket ?

I have a kenwood amp i can run these on till i can afford beter!

Ok so how bad is my list , othere than the morel's? Some here i should run from? I cant listen to any of them so i need your help,it would be a 100 mile drive or more to a store that sells them . I dont mind buying a set of home audio speakers but would need help matching a set of 6.5" drivers with tweeters and crosovers,im finding the web site at parts express not the most user friendly, maybe its just me!

Thanks jeffdachef

for the help,i like cost per speaker on your recomended,

silver flute w17rc38-04

And

vifa xt25tg30-04

Could u help with crossover points to get me started?

hp for tweeters and band pass for the woffers.

i know these might not be set in stone as the cars acoustics varies.

maybe even a 4 channel amp recomendation for them, even though this isnt the amp forum !!!:)

One of the Best bang for the buck in the $200 range, for 3 way = Precision Power P65C3. For 2 way active id get the NVX XSP6ACT set, or for a little less $$ the silver flute mid with the NVX X series tweeter is a winner.

i've ran those drivers before. the silver flute will play down to 50Hz but beam around 3kHz - so aiming is important if you want to play them higher than 3kHz. they don't need a low pass filter though and have a smooth roll-off. i had good luck with running them with a HPF around 60Hz (on the amp) and no passive at all on the woofer. though they do blend better with a LPF. then the tweeters get a 12dB/oct 4kHz crossover from an amp (active capable) or passive. Parts Express sell individual crossovers for 4 ohm speakers. you can build on this and add a 2"-4" midrange driver for a 3-way setup using the Silver Flute as a midbass.

the tweeters you linked have HUGE faceplates. too big for use in a car. there are smaller faceplate versions with neo magnets that will fit better. I used the faceless versions in spheres with great success.

if you pick up an amp that is active capable (like the Alpine MRV-F405 made in 1996) you can forgo the passive crossover and tune to your liking.

These woofers are beefy and deep - 3" deep when mounted. many cars cannot handle that size/depth so using these woofers forced me to make panel modifications
