Speaker wire/remote + Mastering the router.

My remote wire sucks, I wanted to re-run a thicker wire. I have a ton of speaker wire laying around, I figured I'd use some of that. Would that work? I wasn't sure if there was some deep down forbidden secret as to what particular wire should be used for the remote.

Secondly, I have a router, but I have no f'n idea how to make these sub cutouts. My jigsawing is nothing short of pathetic so I'd like to migrate to something more precise. I keep finding suggestions for using the router, but no pictures or detailed how-to explanations. Any input?
