So I'm not too keen on installing an amp to power my speakers so I wish to know what is the max I can install while my head unit still being able to power them. I have a deh-x55hd. Not the nicest head unit but I got it for free. On specs it says that it has continuous power of 22w over 4 channels. I would only be powering two 6x9 speakers so with those numbers what is my max? Never done any of this.

That HU is very basic, with a few optional things on it.

Unless it has a few pairs of RCA pre outs to hook up a 50x4 4 ch amp, your HU won't power your speakers much. I mean they will but don't expect them to get loud.

Cars are loud environments. Have you tried the speaker in the car in a garage plugged into an outlet? Start isolating variables.
