Source for highest-end equipment?

I do have a very good idea of what I want to do, just wanted to know generally the best places to look for near-or-at top-of-the-line equipment.
I guess it depends on what you consider top-of-the-line. Some people think JL Audio is top of the line, but in my eyes they're shit because they're not real performers vs. price. Then I know of some companies that sell awesome equipment but they're not mainstream - wait, does that make them not top-of-the-line? Its all perception.

And, I prefer to plan things backwards I guess: Start with the absolute best I can possibly come up with regardless of price, then back down from there until it is affordable.
I predict a major fail then. That's just throwing money at a project and hoping for good results. Are you sure you don't work for the goverment? .... anyways, good luck with that.

I've personally seen sony xplodes purchased at a local walmart do over 150 db. Again, it's all in the install.
Don't go to crutchfield or Bust Buy, you'll get *** ***** on the price and won't have much to show for it..

It sounds like you have no idea what your looking for or where to start. I suggest you make a budget first, then go to the classifieds here and find some equipment used. That way, you'll outgrow it eventually and by then you'll figure out what you want.
That's also probably someone who knows perfectly what they are doing. You can't try to just prove him wrong with one instance. How many people who have explodes have systems like that? None. Also, sony explodes aren't only sold at wal-mart //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

I was trying to prove him wrong with his own example //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

You could just buy Focal Be's, Brax amps and a Denon source and be done //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif. I'm not calling that the best but the amp and source choice is solid lol. I've never actually heard the Focal Be's, I was just naming expensive stuff. Or buy Rainbow Ref speakers those are what 7k?

You must've missed the part where I said I would back it down to where it is affordable.

The government doesn't do that. They decide what they want to do, then take whatever it costs from taxpayers.

yeah! great idea! Also, let's not use any copper wire for any of the signals between the souce unit and amplifiers - let's all run fiber optics so we can reduce the .0000000000000001% distortion that may come inductance.

Well we should start with: What are you looking to accomplish?

If you are looking to compete in SPL or SQ, then we need to know which organization/class and then go from there. There are no SQL competition formats that I'm aware of.

Oh I work for the goverment, I know exactly what they do. or....more to the point have no idea what to do. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Wayne had one in the works, but I don't know how far he got with that, or at all. And in MECA, you can't go over 85 db unless there is a tie in your class.

Maybe I asked the wrong question then, so how about this one:

Can you list some equipment brands/ models that are commonly seen in SQL & SPL competition vehicles. Amps, speakers and subs please.

I can figure out where to get it.

Not talking about one Mensa dude who figured out how to totally rock a 40-watt Jenson amp and two 6x9's //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
