sounds of distortion?

i had the same prob... for my jl w6v2 you can see the excersion go way out. and it all around starts to sound ugly.

here is the proper procedure to set gains:

Firstly, set Bass, Treble, Loudness and any other equalisation controls to flat. Set amp gains to minimum.

Switch on system, and set main volume control to around 80-90% volume. Make a mental note that the volume level used during set-up is to be considered peak volume in normal use, with remaining 10-20% to be treated as 'overdrive', and only used for very short bursts of higher output.

Next, play material through the system similar to that which will commonly be played during normal use. If the head unit is running speakers from it's own internal amplification, listen carefully for any audible distortion from these speakers and, if any is evident, reduce volume until distortion is eliminated - again, treating this volume level as peak volume for normal operation.

Slowly increase gain level on amplifier(s) until distortion just becomes audible through speakers. Once this point is reached, reduce gain fractionally until distortion disappears.

Wherever possible, use of additional equalisation should be avoided in amplified systems, as it can often significantly increase distortion within amp's input signal.

The above procedure is widely used throughout the car audio industry, and will give reliable results in most systems. Highly dynamic source material, or excessive use of bass, treble, and EQ controls can however significantly increase distortion levels even below the 80-90% volume level used above. In all cases, if distortion becomes audible, reduce volume immediately to avoid risk of damage to speakers and/or amplifiers.

Good luck it worked for me

yea i think i got it close im just thinkin im expecting too much spl from a sub that really isnt supposed to have that kind of output, im gonna port it this summer, whats everyone think?

diamond sent me a blueprint but only recommends 300watts, now i know that infinite baffle setups reduce powerhandling by about half but to me that seems very underated for a ported box the cm3 handles 500 in a sealed id think more around 400 for a ported (1.5cu tuned to 30hz i think) whats everyone think?

well if u know what a sub is then ull know what the distortion is, look at the sub and listen to it, if it sounds like a wet fart and sounds like a** and dont sound right then it is more than likely distortin unless sumthin is wrong with the speaker, but usually u can tell just by lookin at it, if its movin alot more than u expect it to be but till sounds like it should then there aint nothing wrong with it well hoped that helped

see the thing is i know speakers, i know them very well, but maybe im just paranoid with it right now since i started with home audio everythings always in front of me so i can monitor it...i had an infinity kappa perfect 12.1d and blew it up idk it this was a result of distortion or not so now im just worried....it was getting 50w over its rms tho
