Sound "wobbles" at low volume

I've had this setup for a few years and been happy with my results.

0gauge back to a distribution block. original factory removed. Replaces with LC2i powered converter. Converts to RCA an LINE for amp. grounded to frame. infinity 1211a pushing 854W RMS. 2x 10" infinity Kappa Perfects. in a downfire custom FoxBox. Remote gain.

Used to, could gain my bass in accordance to the music. Now, when i start to turn down the thumb, i get a warped sound. my low lows still pound as if it were gained to the max. the higher lows start dropping off the spectrum. this leaves lowered volume music with thumping lows, and higher lows that SHOULD be picked up are being left out completely, or muted for half the note.

It this a tuning issue? a mechanical isssue? any idea?

are you using a bass know or some type of eq with a bass knob, reason is I had a similar thing happen with an in dash eq that had knobs for adjustment but sometimes I would want to turn the bass knob on the eq up or down and the bass sounded like it was cutting in and out or sounded like you were rapidly turning the knob up and down, so I switched it out and problem went away. not sure if this will help but this was my experience. could be the lC2i .
