Sound help

I have a Mazda Protege 03. My problem is with stock stereo and speakers you can hear most of the music word for word outside the car as well inside. I don't even have the volume up that much. My fiance's car you can barely hear anything but his subs outside his car and his volume is cranked way up. Is it just the style of car or is there anything I can change so that most of the sound stays within the body and only the bass can be mostly heard outside? I'm also changing the deck, adding a 10" sub and an amp here in a bit... will that change it anything?
