Looking to buy some sound deadener and really wanting to avoid using peel and seal, so I was looking for some better stuff. I came across this stuff called audio barrier and it seems for the price that it is a good deal. It's as thick as most of the other companies and its butyl based and its $100 for 36 Sq Feet.

You guys think I could do two doors and a rear deck with 36 Sq ft in a mazda rx8.

Anyone else think this stuff seems like a good buy ? I can't find anything on it.

Audio barrier looks to be the same thickness as Dynamat Extreme but they do not tell us any info on the butyl composition or the foil thickness.

Provided the foil is as thick as Dynamat Extreme (4 mils) $100 is not a bad deal at all.

Here's their pitch. It's pretty funny, but not entirely for the reasons they intended. It looks a lot like this stuff, from the fine folks in China who mistook Extruded Butyl Rope for a mass market product //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

It really is hard to know if it's any good without seeing the adhesive and foil thickness so I just ordered some and will post back when it gets here. There's no doubt that calling a vibration damper "Audio Barrier" is pretty misleading right out of the gate.

I received the Audio Barrier speaker kit I ordered the other day. Looks like this -

Came with a 79 cent 1" roller (wwot), but it was free so no complaints.

Made in China, so I'm pretty sure it's from the source I linked earlier.

So what's it like? It's a pretty good Dynamat Xtreme copy. Butyl adhesive, 4 mil foil. It uses a plastic film instead of a paper release liner, but that shouldn't matter. The adhesive is pretty good. It's not as good as Dynamat's but it is better than many other butyl products and certainly way better than anything made of asphalt. Slightly lower heat tolerance, adhesive bond characteristics that aren't quite as good and a little less elastic than I'd like to see, but pretty good.

I obviously have my own prejudices about these things. After a year of using nothing but my own product, it struck me that large sheet dampers are pretty inconvenient and don't make a lot of sense. That's just my opinion. All that aside, people like them and Audio Barrier should perform well. If you look at all of the butyl based products out there, you have a premium group and then a bunch of thin foil or Mylar faced products that don't perform very well. I wouldn't put Audio Barrier in the premium group, but it is much closer to them than the other cheap materials sold for damping. The name will confuse people.
