No, Sony's orginial player was the BDPS1 that was $999 new and still $799 in stores. This is a completely new player to get a better share of the market. Physically, its shorter than the BDPS1 but still, a true blu-ray player; full 1080P output as well as upconversion to full 1080P.lol. is that the one that was selling for $999 when it came out?
Blah I don't rent movies I buy them....Sorry HD-DVD fans, but that format is nearly dead now.

do you really think its worth it to drive to a store and spend $3-6 for gas when you can just get it in the mail?
I'm pretty sure the "Blu-ray" has to do with the optics in the player. Think it uses a blue laser instead of red.Blu-Ray
.. stupid name, just like other stupid names in audio ...
You could have called it yello-moose ........
At leat the name HD-DVD is pretty clear on what it's all about... lol
Yah but blu ray wont be available in all their stores more like 1/3. But do you think their gonna add something new and spend so much money on it and not pass the cost to the consumers?More people rent than buy, and with so many Blockbuster outlets that you're likely to drive by one nearly everyday, waiting for an order to process and be delivered by mail seems extremely lazy and not well thought out.
Besides, BB now has the same program as Netflix but you can exchange movies without cost at the store, so no waiting for an order.
