I get that you've got the following specs:
1.79 cubes gross
1.04 cubes NET volume
Tuned at approximately 44Hz
The port is, by my calculations, 36" long. You've got to make sure that you add in the length that is added by the thickness of the wood on both the front of the box and on the port walls.
Tuning is the tricky part. For reference, you'd be tuned at 35Hz at about 32" of port length on a box that was 1.81 cubes, so you're doing the calculation correctly (or very close). The problem is that tuning has to be calculated using the net volume rather than the gross volume because the volume taken up by the port doesn't count towards what the driver sees/uses.
