Sold a pair of Subs, new owner claims one is bad, need your advice

Here is what happened. Had a pair of 10" Kicker L5 Solo barics in box with Amp I sold to this kid off craigslist. Pulled the subs/amp from my Truck about a year and a half ago, they sounded and worked great and have sat ever since. Kid bought them and emails me the next evening saying the one works fine but the other has one blown voice coil and the other is about to blow. Doubt any of this happened from just sitting but what could the chance be he had the gain too high, clipping or something not set correctly and he managed to damage the VC's themselves if that is in fact whats wrong? Before I sold them I push down on the center of the cone and listed for any sort of scratching or rough sounding just to make sure nothing was wrong before I got rid of them and didn't hear anything, everything sounded great.

Just wondering what you would do in this situation? Kid said he was going to see what it would cost to get them fixed but I'm thinking that is going to be around $100.

Sold him the subs in the box with a 1800w pyramid amp. He hooked the subs up to some other Rockford Fosgate amp he had and claimed that the one was bad after doing so.

Any advice/input is greatly appreciated.

I'm more than willing to help the guy out but if it was something caused on his end I don't want to be out the money for it.

Not to be an ***....but screw him. Did you sell on terms that you would repair any damages found after the sale? No. He should've tested them before paying(especially for used equipment and it was local pickup). It's his problem now. It's not like he's gonna take legal action. And even if he did, did you give him a receipt? Cause without that you didn't sell him anything. I think something like that varies greatly from the classifieds section here where people don't have access to test what they buy so I would hope arrangements can be made if something were faulty. But something like your situation...

And yes, it's possible that he rocked the voicecoils already

Nah didn't promise anything to him. The only thing I said may give him a problem is the amp as it was a cheap pyramid thing that was like 5 years old to begin with. I offered a few people who inquired about them to hook them up to hear them if they wanted but no one really seemed interested in that and he didn't ask if he could. The only reason I didn't is I don't have the hooks up in my truck as its just a standard cab Silverado which is why I sold them because I had no room.

No receipt or anything of the sort, I just met him, he gave me the cash and I gave him the subs/box/amp.

This is a huge reason why I hate selling electronic crap, I take good care of my stuff and keep it nice and now I got some guy claiming I sold him bad subs. Not sure if he is just trying to get a few bucks out of me or what.

I would feel bad about it if they truly were bad and he didn't do anything but I know for a fact they were in great working order when I pulled them and they just sat in my spare bedroom ever since.

I sold a sub to a kid of CL, two weeks later he contacts me saying its blown and I sold it to him blown. I knew it was BS so I told him its on him. They threaten to mess with your car and stuff but if you respond with, well you'll have a nice court case they shut up.

thats y u never meet at your house or where u will be parked or anything.......but anyways he should have tested them before paying up. to late now. who knows what he did to them. how much did us ell them for anyways?

Thanks for all the replies so far guys. Think before I tell him tough sh*t has anyone had subs lay around for a while like 1 year + and just had VC's go bad? Subs were working good and sounding great when I pulled them so the only other thing would be that the died while sitting which I would have a hard time believing that would ruin them vs. him hooking them up wrong or too much, gain or whatever the story may be.

As for what I got and what I sold him, I sold him the 2 10" Kicker L5's with a sealed box and some Pyramid 1800w amp for $175 total so its not like I made out like a fat cat or anything to where I can afford to give him back cash being I don't think it was really anything that I did to them.

Yeah I met him at a grocery store in town here, its a small city and he only lived like 15 minutes away so I wouldn't be surprised to run into him at some point in the future but not really worried about that. As for price, I sold him the whole setup for $175, that was 2 10" L5's with sealed box and a Pyramid 1800w amp.

It didnt sound like you actually tested any of the equipment before the sale. My cousin sold a bunch of subs that looked fine untill all the new owners called him back. Water had dripped on the subs in the attic and killed them all, but they looked perfect. As with all this stuff, it is sold as is though.

With local sales all that shit is as-is. You have to test stuff before you complete the sale, if you don't then that's just stupid (believe me, I know from personal experience). I just went to buy an amp from a guy and took the extra 5 minutes to hook it up and test it, **** thing made my sub squeal something fierce...obviously no deal

If you go to buy something and the guy doesn't want to let you test it, that should be a huge red flag :p

OP as far as your case is concerned, I'd tell the kid, sorry about your luck you should have tested them first.

You probably should have tested them again before selling them off. I've had an amp die on my once before just sitting in my room. Worked great when I uninstalled it, then about 2 years later I went to use it and the inputs were jacked up. I probably knocked it around a bit over two years and never payed attention to it, but the point is shit happens.

Though, on the flip side, HE should have tested it before he bought it, so that's not really your problem. Plus, how do you know that he didn't go ape shit on them in the time he's had it?

This is why I let people test/demo stuff I sell on CL. I sold my iPhone on CL a few months ago, met up with the guy at a Starbucks and let hit put his SIM in it, make a few phone calls, all that crap so he knew it was in working order when he took possession of it.
