Anyway so he see's me working on my box, and decides he wants one for his truck.

His excuse for not buying a prefab(like I told him to) was that it looked too flimsy. And he was pissed that they offered him Pioneer Premiere Subs. In his mind pioneer = pure shit.

Now the reason I told him to buy a prefab is that he drives a Chevy 2500HD crew cab diesal truck. He needs to keep the passenger space so that leaves two places for the equipment.

1. Under the backseat

2. Behind the backseat

Now I told him that a box like that would be too difficult for me since I dont have the right tools. With this he said He would pay $150 for tools

At this point im thinking that maybe I should attempt it.

Heres the problem. The rear seat has a max space of

Bottom Depth, Top Depth, Height, Width

6.5", 3" x 11" x 49"

thats a **** small/annoying box to cut but its doable. I also told him he would need a shallow mount sub and the pioneers are a good / almost only choice.

So should I attempt it? Or should I just point him towards the MTX oem prefab box that includes 2 mtx 10"s already

On the one hand I get free tools

on the other it will probably be a big hassle

I dont have a table saw, I dont have a miter saw. All I have is a crappy walmart jigsaw that cant cut straight, a palm sander, and drills. I do have plenty of clamps(20 total) So with this money I would want to buy either a Router+Table and bits, or a new jig saw + router + bits

As for table/miter. I can use them at my work for free any time.

boxes for a crew cab chevy are a PITA ***. I would def say go prefab, subthump has a nice one that many have said good things about. His best bet would prob go with 2 decent 8" subs. If you also notice on the prefab boxes they recess into the seats some for extra mounting dept as well. Have it search around the truck forums because there are a lot of people who have great results with pre fab boxes.

if hes buying you $150 dollars worth of tools, why not build it?

i would go with 2-8" subs instead, so you wont have to worry about not having enogh enclosure volume for them,

good options are.

EU-700 from Elemental designs.

QT210-4 from dayton loudspeaker

W8-740C from TB speakers "Bang Band speakers"

the list goes on.

lol

good luck.

he doesnt want 8's. already tried that.

The volume is not an issue. It's the depth

the real reason im hesitant to make this box is i cant cut a circle to save my life. twice ive tried to cut a circle for my box. twice i've failed. The second time was better but it's too big, even though it's exactly the right size that diamond audio says. You wouldnt be able to screw the sub in all the way

If you are worried about the box being to small, you could always shim the backseat and make the box bigger. Just put some spacers in between the the seat bracket and the floor where it bolts in. This will give you more room to work and expands his options for what kind of subs he wants to buy.

My buddy has a Silverado 1500 ext. cab and just bought to 10" W7's, which have an 8 inch mounting depth. We thought of many different ways to mount these and one of the ways we are seriously considering is in fact shimming the back seats. Our other option which we might also do is to rebuild the bottom of the seat into a box. This way we have our 8" mounting depth and then some.

forget the jigsaw...

watch ebay for a couple days and grab a high quality used router for 50 bucks shipped... you can make a circle jig with a regular *** piece of wood and... theres your box //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

personally, i'd decide on a height for the box, build the bottom with fiberglass, cut a piece of wood to fit the contour of the bottom of the box across the front (think template + router or jigsaw + sanding), and another for the back, then make sides and attach a flat top piece...

i'm also a fan of shimming the seats for extra mounting depth...
