So i built my computer, now ive got some questions.

No because you arnt installing linux, it doesn't write a single file to your systemsee below

http://software.opensuse.org/

A LiveCD, Live CD or LiveDistro is a computer operating system that is executed upon boot, without installation to a hard drive. Typically, it is named after the bootable medium it is stored on, such as a CD-ROM (Live CD), DVD (Live DVD) or a USB flash drive (Live USB).

The term "live" derives from the fact that these distributions are a complete, functioning and operational operating system residing on the distribution medium. A LiveDistro does not alter the operating system or files already installed on the computer hard drive unless instructed to do so. LiveDistros often include mechanisms and utilities for more permanent installation, including disk partitioning tools. The default option, however, is to allow the user to return the computer to its previous state when the LiveDistro is ejected and the computer is rebooted. It is able to run without permanent installation by placing the files that typically would be stored on a hard drive into RAM, typically in a RAM disk. However, this does cut down on the RAM available to applications, reducing performance somewhat. As of 2007, certain LiveDistros run a graphical user interface in as little as 32Mb RAM.
So im assuming i have to burn this onto a CD? If i have to i could stick it back into my external case.

ill most likely try this after i get the paste.

Scoobydoo: I need to look around locally but after ill let you know.

do you have computers at home that came with a windows XP installation disk? if they do and have a windows XP serial number on the side of the computer just go ahead and install XP on the new computer and use that same serial. you can re-register the serial at least 3 times or on 3 different systems. if you do get an issue with the reg key just call windows and give them a story that you were having bad OS issues with spyware and viruses that you just had to format the hard drive and need to start from scratch. they'll give you a new key during the installation.

i know this cause i've re-installed my XP that i got from a dell desktop a number of times. then i purchased a second copy of XP and i currently have it installed on 3 different computers with the same serial on 2, the third i had to call for. had no problems. 1st is mine in this house. 2nd is my brothers computer which he lives else where in the same city. 3rd is on a friends daughters computer which is a compaq. noooo problems!

Ok, so i got home, and i got the Xp and paste from scooby. Now ive got another issue.

I turn it on, the ASUS screen pops up, shortly after the XP screen pops up. Now im assuming this is from the installation the guy put on. Then itll go to a blue xp screen and will say that its restarting the setup, after a bit, it will go to another xp screen that lists setup, installation etc. on the left side. Then it will ask to put in the XP disc, which i do than it says that the file asms is missing and its unable to finish the install.

Now, what i want to do is delete everything from the drive and just totally redo the installation from the CD i have. Also what is the problem its having?

change your bios to boot from the cdrom first, it will boot right into the xp disc, load drivers and then will give you options to format and partition

delete all the partitions(if more than one) and then recreate the partition, then fomat that using quick format and then choose to setup xp on it

could be a lot of things. dirty disk, bad RAM. My guess is a bad disk.
If you want to wipe the drive find this program called D-Bans boot & nuke, but you may not have to do that.
By disk you mean the CD right? The harddisk just got replaced.

Another question, ive got another computer with XP on it, could i swap the HDD with that and put it on this one? Its not a SATA so it probably wont work.

In the BIOS the computer recognizes the CD drive, CPU, and the HDD, as well as the ram.

do not use any programs to format your hard drive. use the windows installation CD to format the computer or use Command to format.

is the installation stall happening after you proceed to the installtion after the windows cd has loaded up itself in dos(blue screen)?

second is this a burned CD or an actual XP cd? not all burned copies of installation disk come out 100%. this being with games and such.

just keep trying, clean the disk and what not.

you could swap the HD but it really is not good.

for more help try this forum. they are very knowledgeable and helped me resolve my issues when i did my first computer build.

It boots up on the HDD, but it looks like the guy didnt finish the installation so its not fully installed but wants to resume on a different disk. The disk is burnt, but i didnt burn it.

I just stuck the disk in the working comp and the installation screen pops up. Seems like the disk is good.
