So do I just buy a new amp or...

Before I begin, I would ask that vendors don't try to get me to order something from them, thank you.

My bass setup is an Infinity Kappa 120.9W powered by a Rockford Fosgate R500X1D. Wiring is KnuConceptz 4 gauge amp kit and LOC is just a simple PAC. It sounded nice and clean yesterday after tuning the amp a bit. It sounded good last night and this morning, but this afternoon things sounded a little distorted or just not as clean I expect. Really just thought it was my perception (seem to think this alot lol). Listened to some music in the driveway and it started going in and out of protect mode (light flickered in between the two). Just a couple weeks ago I took it to the shop to have it checked out and the guy said the last shop hadn't wired the amp to the sub incorrectly. Worked fine until today. A couple months ago my amp was checked out back for the same issue when I was running my P1s and the issue was the fuse or its holder not being right causing a poor connection. Ground wiring has been checked within this time frame of two or so months.

So, do you guys think the amp is just on its way out? I kind of find it odd that it does fine after its looked at then just starts acting up again.

Need to pull the woofers and check the coil resistance and make sure it's not the woofers and it's the amp.
I think that was checked a few weeks ago. And this same issue was checked out when I had different subs. I also pressed on my sub and the voice coil isn't frozen. I just don't get why the amp wouldn't just die already if this is the third time the issue has occurred

It's a small amp. If turned up to loud it will clip the signal trying to produce more power then it's capable of making cleanly.. so it could be burning up coils/tinsel leads.

That makes sense. Are you saying I should go with a bigger amp or just a better quality 500W amp? The sub is 350W RMS but it definitely is underrated. I just don't want to give it anymore than 500W. And there was no evident burning smell

Im saying you need to trouble shoot and see if it's the woofers of the amp. Take the woofers out the box and check their coils with a DMM.

In right box I wouldn't hesitate putting it on a 1k amp. Keep it clean and eyes open and sub will do just fine seeing a tru 500+ on music. As music is dynamic it would rarely see that 500+ and when it does it would be for secs. The key is clean power...

I have it sealed rn and it honestly hits as hard as my 2 12 P1s did ported lol. I just don't get how a 500W amp can't handle a 350w RMS sub when it handled 2 ported subs with the same RMS. I only have gain halfway as well. If we are sure it's an amp (which I think it is as it did it before I sold my other subs) I'm probably going to pick up an MRV 500. I don't really want 1000w as I don't have an amp on my speakers yet

Want me to look at it sometime? Where in STL are you located?
I'm in South County, but the guys at the shop said they'll check it out for me for free if I had another issue. No need for you to have to take time out and come check. It has been checked Twice already so it's probably just done for lol

here's the thing, Your ported box is basically junk and not designed right. You dont buy pre-made ported boxes from factory or offbrand boxes and expect it to sound good or get loud. It absolutely does NOT work that way whatsoever in any universe.

Your current sub in a properly engineered and designed ported box built by someone who knows what they are doing will have all the SQ of a sealed box but get deeper and louder playing a wider range of notes A LOT louder.

you never know. I'd trust gary over the shops anyday. You can also hear a legit system for the first time as well.

It was a prefab box so yes nothing too good. I like ported, but I more so went with sealed for trunk space and so I didn't have to spend too much on a box.

Normally a random protect is a connection issue. Pac may need to be adjusted. My guess is always ground. Make sure it's secure to bare, sanded down metal.
Thank you. Ground has been checked recently and it is just fine i think my guy may have even regrounded it just to be safe. And could an incorrectly adjusted LOC make it not sound as good or could it be the cause of all this?
