Smd subwoofer looking for reviews

I'm thinking about a SMD 18 on 6000 watts in my blow through. I don't know much about the woofer looking for some educated reviews. I'm not a SMD nut hugger not a fan of his but I like the design and features of the sub. I know it's an FI product sold under the aa name. I would think it would be a quality product.

It's a dual gap motor correct? probably not terribly efficient, but should have a ton of x-max. AFAIK there's no sub on the planet that'll take 6KW for more than half a minute tops. I expect you would pay out the arse for a recone when you blow it.

It's a supergauss design I believe. The 2 motors/magnets have opposite polarities, iirc. I think they are supposed to be really nice woofers. They will work well in a small enclosure on a lot of power. Keep in mind the SMD's have a 4" coil.

It's not "just a dual motor woofer". If you are interested in the specifics of the motor design and the reasons for having the secondary coil, you might be wise to contact AA and speak to a qualified tech there to help you understand the functionality of the compound motor structure and the "breaking system" incorporated in the top gap.

If you'd take either of those other two over this one without knowing how well the SMD would perform in the proper alignment for the job, you are not quite thinking straight. The review by Vance Dickason is seriously flawed in one major aspect. All of the listening tests were done with a manufacturer's recommended enclosure. Of course it would be "vented" with X port area and Z port length, "tuned to whatever". There is no question that his listening experience would've had him writing in a totally different direction had a proper alignment been engineered. For an excellent analogy, watch this video a few times. It goes over tuning frequency versus what is actually heard and the only thing that tuning frequency actually has any bearing on and that is effectively excursion at that frequency.

All in all, the SMD18 has the ability to be an excellent SQL subwoofer in the right alignment, just like the Kicker Solo X line of subs. The 18" is a very musical sub despite what many unaware folk have said over the years.

I have heard this from a different source as well. So folks, he's not blowing smoke.

You won't see me blowing smoke. If I don't know I won't respond. Or if asked to, I'll respond with "I don't know" or "I'll find out" or "I don't know and don't give enough of a crap about it TO find out" or maybe "I don't know and your mother's fat, ugly and dresses you funny". Depends on the "alignment"......ROR.
