small ported box 10"

well i won a small .85 cubic foot box off ebay, i was hoping to play around with it using external aero ports. what kinda sub can i get good SQ out of in a small ported box like that? i know ED has tens that like about 1.0 cuft ported. i'm not sure if i will use this in my home theater or in the car. i just want something to play around with. i n the car i have about 800 watts at 2 ohms, and 400 watts at 4 ohms. 4 ohms will be okay if the sub has a high sensitivity. any suggestions?

Because ironically, the HO only needs about .7 cubes ported. With the box he has, after driver displacement, it'll be about right, especially if he retrofits ports to it, with a part of the port inside the box to take up more space, it'll work out nicely.

thanks! thats exactly what i wanted to hear. i'm really excited. i love speaker projects. i am actually expecting pretty decent output too. it's got A LOT higher sensitivity than my SSi. so even though it'll be getting half the power i think the output will be enough for an SQ setup. if it's not enough i'll grab another and run 2 ported on 400 watts each. like i said i'm excited!!

also i tried looking for a TC Sounds OEM 10 and couldn't easily find one. this is looking promising though!

i'm not doubting you but where did you or anybody find box specs on the daytons? PE doesn't list them and i looked on daytons website and couldn't find anything either.

i do believe you... and the graphs on winisd and the other program i saw them drawn on look awesome. i was just curious.

Remember Chad from DIYMA? I asked him about his box because he did a review of the 10" HO in the review section, and I was curious about it.

He had it in a .7 cube sealed box, and told me after having a few beers one night, decided to try it ported, same box, just added ports. From his experience I made my decision to do the same thing.

You can see pictures of my box in this thread.

I actually emailed PE for box specs, and they came back to me with a very different number, like 1.5 cubes per driver for ported, which I was very hesitant about, because the HOs definitely DO NOT like large boxes, or at least my 12" HO didn't, it's dead now because of that. There's no doubt in my mind if I went with PE's recommendations, I know I wouldn't be happy at all, I would have ended up with a bloated low end, which is exactly what I didn't want, because my XXX was the same way, and I didn't care for it much.

nice... i noticed you listen to Opeth (saw ur avatar). i listen to them and all kind of stuff just like them. the HO's play this type of music very well huh? i'm looking for fast accurate bass with a good kick.

Yep, all I listen to is heavy metal, and variations of that, and I really couldn't be happier with them. On full tilt, the pair really kicks you in the chest on kick drums, and the bass guitar is so smooth sounding, it sounds like a bass guitar should and I love it.

Are you a fan of The Project Hate? Or have you even heard of them? You NEED to get their newest album.

hmmmm.... i wonder how the output will really be on one with 400wrms in the box i'll have it in with only 7 sq inches of port. i'm gonna bet i'll need to add a second one.... but we will see.

i have never heard of them. i will look them up. who do they sound the most like?

You have a hatch, it probably wont be that bad, but I have a 4-door sedan, with a pretty solid trunk, so I wanted an extra one, plus the LP 2.2HV prefers 8ohm bridge loads, which gives each between 400 and 500 watts.

TPH, hmmm who do they sound like? They're kinda like a cybertronic death metal band, but it's not over done that it sounds like just regular heavy metal, but they add touches here and there. Check out their myspace for a few songs.

alrighty... well we will see on the output. only 7 inches of port area won't cause port noise with this sub? thats what is really worrying me the most. i have tried 3" pvc as a port before and got some noise(but this was with a sub that has 27mm xmax that was getting a good 800 watts or more).

i'm on myspace right now giving them a listen. thanks man! ur very helpful!

It shouldn't. Chad was using 2 2" pvc ports, which is about 6 sq inches, and he mentioned nothing of port noise.
