Small alternator problems?

Was looking for a larger alt for my 87 b2000 and noticed the stock ones are only 42 amp!!! I didn't think they'd be that small. So aside from the 55 amp upgrade that I've been able to find what other options do I have? I'll only be running the soundqubed 1200. Also, would that be alright to run on stock electrical until I get whatever upgrades I may need? Just trying to get all my ducks in a row.... Thanks

I don't have any specific info for you, but sometimes there will be some options that are off the beaten path.

I would start by scouring the net for info on that particular engine. You may find that it was used in other applications with more optioned electrical systems and larger alternators.

Or maybe even a similar model (different engine) but interchangeable alternators.

My old '88 Tbird (Turbocharged 2.3L) came with a 75A alternator, but I found that the alternator off a 89-95 Supercoupe (SC 3.8L V6) was a direct bolt on with 110A. Found one at a salvage yard for $60 and it totally eliminated my electrical problems.

I don't really want to Fab anything up. I'd rather have a 3 wire over a 1 wire thou. Read somewhere that an 84 camaro alt would fit with only a bottom bracket Fab but they're only 94 amp. Gonna look at my speed3 alt in the morning, if it looks like it'll fit I'll just use that one lol
