simple amp question

i have 2 "600 watt" rated subs and i wanted to know if im supposed to get a 600 watt amp or does that only put out 300 watts per sub, or should i get a 1200 watt amp.

The only rating that matter is the RMS (root mean square) wattage. Any amp will work but you should get one that power both your speakers and ideally have some headroom available. In your example you would want the 1200W amp, assuming that is the output at the ohm load your speakers are presenting to the amp.
