Whut up. Ive got a 2000 ford ranger with 2 Diamond 10" M3 subs running on a JBL 600.1 in a ported box facing down. I have to do a culminating project for my senior year so im looking for some speakers and an amp that will sound good with my subs. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also any ideas on new subs other than tha usual TDX and W7 i wouldn't complain about either.

well i used to think i knew alot until i got onto this website but im happy with my subs for now. Just lookin for speaks and maybe mid-range but a local shop was tellin me that mids wouldn't be very helpful. My overall goal is to one day hopefully compete but i would need to start all over again by what ive seen here. lol. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/chix.gif.b7a2c3844cd4b49b8430443da768250e.gif

Having a good component set is the most important thing in a system (other than install and tuning). The mids are what plays the majority of the frequencies, and they play the important frequencies no less.

IMO, if you are happy with your subs, then keep them. A good component set will only make them sound better.

Before we start.......speaker placement and aiming are very, very important as to how well the component set actually performs. You can buy the best component set in the world, but if you install and tune them improperly then they'll sound like poop. So, are you willing to build kickpanels, or have someone build you kickpanels?? If you seriously want to compete someday, then you need to learn the basics now......and it all starts with a good install. Stock door locations can work good, but the pathlengths (especially in a truck) aren't the greatest.

Mos Def I would be willing to build my kickpannels etc. but i definitely dont know anything about that. Any suggestions on how to get started anyone?

At that same shop they suggested a 3 speaker focal 165 V3E series set with a 6in., a 3in., and a tweeter. They recommended putting the 6in. in the stock slot, the 3 inch forward of the door handle but not directly above it, and the tweet in the corner piece of the door right next to the window. I also looked at some eclipse 5x7 and assumed they would replace my stock ones in the back. As far as an amp goes i have no clue on what i should use to power this setup. Any recommendations are helpful.thx.

1st off, that Focal is a good set. Focal is a good brand in general, so if you hear something you like from them, go ahead and it. Same with Image Dynamics, Boston Acoustics, MB Quart, Rainbow, Arc Audio, DLS, Dynaudio, etc etc.

But, about where they want to put the 3" midrange I'm not too sure about. You'd actually want the 3" mids to be at a point where their pathlengths were equalized more.....which isn't going to be anywhere high on the door. They would actually need to go lower (like, kickpanels) rather than higher to help get more even PLD (pathlength differences). Also, you wouldn't want them to be somewhere that you couldn't easily adjust their aiming. IMO, it would be better to go ahead and put that midbass in the sock locations, then put the midrange and tweeter in the kicks.

The midrange is the most important speaker in that set, and the midrange frequencies are where we get most of our imaging and staging clues from, as well as a majority of the tonality, etc. They are sensitive to being aimed poorly as well as PLD, and having them poorly set up will just kill the entire sound. You's really want to be able to aim them to maximize your soundstaging, as well as having their pathlengths close to even.

Alright. so say i purchased this set of focals. how would i go about testing good positioning, and what should i use to power it. not so much a specific amp but what kind (channels, ohms, power etc.)

As nice as those Focals are, and even with the good advice that squeakmasterflash gave you, unless you are fully prepared to mount these speakers in the places that will give the best results from them (and the obvious expenditure of large coin to do so), keep it to a 2way component set. Listen to different speakers and purchase the ones your ears like. Use a minimum of 50w rms @ 4 ohms to power them, more if you are going to be upgrading to a monster sub system. For the rear speakers, a basic 5x7" in the stock location is fine for fill, try to keep the speakers the same by brand for a good tone / timbre match. You don't want your ears being drawn to the back of the vehicle which is to easy to do in a small truck like this. Pathlengths on speakers are important in a sound competition, mind you with all the cd player starting to add time alignment this is much less of an issue now. While the ideal place to mount a tweeter for pathlengths might in fact be on the kickpanel, if you are a large dude and have another large person driving with you, it is all to easy for your legs to block the tweeters path, thus the mounting location sucks blue whale. The difference between the ideal speaker mounting location and where they are going to work best for you, well we cannot tell you this. You hear different than we do and drive a different vehicle. The last 00 Ranger we did had the MB Quart tweeters mounted up high on the sail panel, the customer was a little larger than most people (230lbs) and his foot was always right where that kick panel needed to be. In this case he chose to put the tweeter up high. End result was still really good sound.
