Sick of feeling like I have to celebrate Easter and other religious holidays.

Okay, first off, I read parts of other threads bashing religion and evolution and such. I felt like I needed some insight anyway.

So I'm an Atheist/Anti-theist. You have the right to celebrate whatever religion you'd like. I can respect that right. . . as an American, but also as a human being. On the other hand I can't really understand it. It seems crazy to me (and you absolutely may disagree) that people dedicate so much of their time to something that does not exist. It'd be like me claiming that some little blue-skinned people inhabit my back yard. There's no way around it. They don't and he doesn't. I get that it's "faith" that carries religion along its way. What's the point of having faith in something non-existent? Seems wasteful to me. There are so many real causes in the world that need more dedication.

Secondly, why do people lie to children? Santa exists? No. The Easter Bunny? The Tooth Fairy. No and no. So why do we tell children that they do? Why not fill the heads of children from a young age the truth about the world? People are hungry. Help them. People are wasteful, don't be. People are greedy. Don't be. . . which includes expecting gifts for Holidays based on disillusion. I don't have kids yet, but mine will not be lied to. At least that's what I say when my fiance isn't arguing with me about it.

Why must we support corporate greed and lies based on tradition? I guess I just needed to vent. I'm sure I could go on and on.

Thanks for any thoughtful comments you may add. No reason to just make vicious attacks. . .

Religion real or not has been around in some form as long as there has been mankind. People have a conscious and subconscious as well as spiritual in their make up.

Same way with easter bunny's and santa claus. Cultures make up things to explain things to children I think. If they don't want kids to play by the river Parents say that's where the boogeyman lives. etc.

I forgot to add that every holiday I am guilt-tripped into going to relatives "just to be with family." "It's not about religion Matt. . . it's just a chance to be with family!"

To me that's like being a cook in the army. A cook may not be killing anyone, but they are directly supporting people who do.

Why am I asked to collapse my belief system just for the day? Wouldn't that make me a hypocrite? Who wants to be hypocritical "just for the day?" Then again, who wants their Mom to cry because they refuse to show up for a family function?

"Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away, Only dimly aware of a Certain Unease in the air. . . " --Pink Floyd, Sheep

There's a reason why this quote is in my signature and I claim to be the God of Rock. . . for the irony.

I don't see why that collapses your belief system. I don't believe in UFO's so it woudn't bother me a bit to go to an alien convention. What do I care if they are running around talking about the gray's and blues and motherships when I know it's just a psychological release?

I thought the same way untill I had a child.. tomorrow I'll ask my 4year old if he thinks the easter bunny may have come.. we'll find a list of clues, and will go hunt for a bit of candy and a couple toys I bought.. It will be fun, and the whole familly will enjoy it..

As for me, I'll enjoy wine and turkey.. I am not seeing a downside to easter here..
