settin the gains...

ok when i looked at my amp after they (local shop) installed it they had the gains + bass eq about 3/4 of the way up and it knocked hard as hell , but after goin back in there and turnin the bass eq to 0 and gain only half way its sooo quiet, even with the gain up to 3/4 of the way its still not nearly as loud with the bass eq up .... i used the tones off bass mekanik quad maximus ... do you think i should go ahead and use the bass eq with a somewhat modest gain setting (about half way)

i "can" somewhat achieve its maximum loudness with the gains almost full tilt but even i know thats just not right ... i dunno, have yall ever had this expierence, almost full tilt with gains just to achieve maximum performance

What is the preout voltage on your headunit?

BTW, keep that ****ed bass boost off. With a properly set gain, the only thing bass boost will do is clip the hell out of the amplifier, which will potentially damage your subwoofers.

^ Or, bass boost may compensate for the 45Hz sealed enclosure rolloff, which is what the bass boost is "supposed" to do; I quote supposed because not many people actually use it for that.

So, kid.

Is your box sealed? Are 30Hz tones [much] louder than 40Hz tones with boost off? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the preout's on my headunit i think are 2 volts, its an alpine 7874 ... its a ported enclosure tuned to 30 hz, and yes its very loud at them low low's and eventally begins to quiet off around 70hz and higher

That's what cabin gain does //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
And not every enclosure has a rolloff begining at 45hz.
You wanna take this outside?!@#?! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/furious.gif.fc81ca146dbff91fede3ed290dbc4f4c.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

pwned again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

well i dont mean it gets quiet i just mean its not as loud... mayby its just my ears cus its not as low , but being tuned to 30 hz it really does hit them lows pretty good

i went out there and turned bass boost all the way down , now i have gains 3/4 of the way up and i can put it to 24/35 of the volume (which is also about 75%) and i believe that is its peak performance before it starts to send a clipped signal

although its still not nearly as loud as with bass boost on... i can still contine to nudge that gain higher and higher but i still cant seem to find any sign or form of sub clipping... mayby i dont know what to look for but i scare myself puttin the gain that high but still not notice any negative side effects (besides more rattling)

use a dmm or o-scope. and a 50hz test tone to set your gains for your sub iirc.

*edit* set your gain to ~38.7v using a dmm (or o-scope if available). that's if its the full 1500rms. plus after imp rise it'll be receiving a little less than rms anyways. that'll be the highest setting without clipping amp (roughly)
