Selecting a Pair of Mids

Currently I have the rear channels of a Phoenix Gold x200.4 bridged, powering a sub. I'm waiting for Ascendant Audio to come out with the new version of the Assassin. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

In the meantime, my stock speakers up front aren't cutting it. There is A LOT more to be desired. I was thinking I could buy a pair of Dayton References to throw in my doors, powering them off of the front channels of my x200.4. Would this be okay? Considering, I would watch the gains very carefully. They could be bandpassed through my amplifier. 100Hz-2500Hz maybe?

I just want something that can give me some more oomph in the midbass-midrange area. As I currently have none.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif I will be deadening/sealing off the doors soon after installing the new mids.

I will be buying some aftermarket tweeters soon thereafter the mids. The stock ones get so distorted... Could I power a pair off my headunit power?

I don't want to go with a component set because I just got laid off, and don't want to spend my money on one. Plus, I will most likely be going active in the future and want some stuff I can upgrade easier. Don't want to drop a lot of money on something I will probably be changing during the summer.

Hopefully you guys can steer me in the right direction. Thanks.

I'm not sure if the Dayton's will like being crossed over that high. In a couple reviews that I have read, they suffer from the standard metal cone breakup in the midrange and you start hearing harmonic distortion creep in. You might be better off looking at one of Seas' paper or poly cone offerings. I am going with the Peerless Exclusives in my setup but they are really hard to get right now and I am waiting at least another two weeks until mine are supposed to be in.

This is a great review that will let you know what's available out there. The Daytons are on there too.

Here is another review of some 6.5-7 inch mids from diymobileaudio.com:

The Reference line doesn't use metal cones.

bechSHO, you didn't mention what size you were thinking of using.

I would probably be able to fit some 6.5"s in my doors. It would take some work, but I should be able to do it.

If not, 5.25" would be the alternative.

The RS150's would probably be the closest to your goal of 100-2500Hz.
