SecondSkin "overkill" too, or only Damplifier?

I own a 2006 Civic Sedan and am looking to do some deadening. I am running a set of Rainbow SLC's and a 12w7, getting 100w x 2 rms & 1000w rms, repectively. I recently took out my 12w7 with plans on reinstalling sometime later. The reason I took it out is because the box I have is way too big and I plan on glassing a nice box/amp rack in at the end of the semester (when I get school break). However, to get me by until the end of the semester I am going to go ahead and deaden my doors really well. I've chosen to go with Second Skin products for more reasons than one. I'm just not sure which product I need: Damplifier or Damplifier Pro. I figure 20 sq feet will be plenty for both doors' inner and outer door skins at one layer each. My goal is to get the most mid-bass response from my SLC's as possible, and if I'm truly satisfied I may not put in my 12w7 indefinately. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

I know Second Skin offers foams as well as other products, so I'm just curious which road I should go down if I truly want to get the best response out of my SLC's. I'd like to spend no more than $100 (I'll use the forum member discount of 20%). For 20sq feet of Damplfieer & Overkill the approximate total would be $64 (before shipping). If some of you could give me opinions on whether or not Damplifier will suffice, or if I should get the over kill, or any other opinions I would appreciate the input. Keep in mind that my car is pretty noisy, so I plan on deadening my entire car at a later time, but for now I'm going to do only the doors.

k, so its 64 for damplifer and overkill? Or is that price for them individually.

Damplifer is good by itself //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

For the both. I know it's not much, but if I don't need the overkill, then it's just overkill. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif (sorry)

Thats not too bad, although I dont have any experiance with "overkill" myself so I couldnt tell you much.

I put about 3 sheets of damplifer on the top of my trunk and it doesnt rattle, only the back ( by the tail lights ) does haha

There is never any such thing as overkill when it comes to deadening...only limits are your checkbook and your door hinges //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Truth. Pocketbook is limiting me to about $100. A member at Second Skin's forums suggested going with 40sq feet- 3 layers per door- 2 inner, 1 outer. He also suggested using the overkill along with it. I'm just not too sure I'd need that extra layer on the inside. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

It really comes down to your vehicle more than anything. Depending on the construction/design of the door, 1 layer might do just fine. Others, it might not. Though trying to squeeze it all with 20sqft seems like a pretty tall order, if you truly want to sound deaden the door well. I think I used somewhere in the neighborhood for 40-50sqft on my two front doors (4-door sedan).

But I would definitely use some type of foam products aswell. Be it egg crate foam, Overkill, Ensolite, or a combination thereof.

Also, there is a pretty good sticky in the speaker section outlining some generally good sound deadening practices for door installs. Check it out //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Damplifier and Overkill are Two completely different products

You use Damplifier to add mass and prevent rattles

You Use overkill to keep noise out (road noise, wind noise, tire noise) And keep IN the music.

You dont use one or the other in an ideal setup you have both.

usually each door will takew a minimum of 8 sq feet or as much as 24 sq feet (more is extreme cases)

Adding a layer of Secondskin Overkill will do a 2 things:

- reduce the passage of airborne sound waves through the doors

- Reduce the echos effect of the mid bass drivers in the doors

People used to use Overkill in side the door only to help with the absorbing of the rear wave, but now that we have the Rear Wave Speaker Kits the combination is outstanding.

Damplifier will do an awesome job at reducing structure borne noise by itself and does not need Overkill to work porperly. The Overkill just helps reduce airborn sound waves, somthing Damplifier (or any vibration mat) is not designed to do.

Hope that helps

So, if Overkill stops sound transmission, why wouldn't someone just use Overkill and forget about using a mat like Damplifier?

I mean, if the vehicle is not the 'rattle-can' construction that some cars are made like, as in if the car doesn't have a ton of noises already, and if outside/road noise is the major complaint, why not just use Overkill (or really any closed cell foam product) and use that to effectively 'sound insulate' the interior?

Seems like a much more cost-effective way to increase the enjoyment of the audio *IN* the car...
