Sealed enclosure for 2 Dayton Audio HF 10's

Hey all, I ordered two Dayton Audio HF 10" Subwoofers today. I choose the High Fidelity(HF) version over the High Output (HO) because they had better sensitivity making them more musical and just seemed like a solid SQ sub at the price-point of $135.86. They should be fine for the music I enjoy the most which is Oldies Rock and Jazz. I'm not a big fan of Rap or Hip-Hop. I plan on wiring them in Parallel for a 2 ohm load and installing them in a sealed enclosure. Dayton Audio says the optimum cabinet size for a sealed enclosure is 0.53 ft3 volume, but when I used AJ Sealed Designer 2.0 the total volume came out to 439.024, so I'm a little confused. Anyone here have experience with these subs and if so can you recommend what size cabinet I should use? The dimensions for the space I have to work with are D26.5" x W40" x H16-17"

What amp are you going to be using?
I haven't purchased one yet. I was planning on using the Sundown Audio SAE-1000D to power them, but I'm certainly open to other suggestions or recommendations.

These really do better ported. Even not listening to rap or hip hop these really tend to shine in ported boxes. They are ineffecient down low and porting helps that quite a bit without hurting your frequency response. Lowest string on a bass guitar is low enough to strongly consider it. Ported you'd want .7 cubic feet tuned around 30hz. If your going sealed in a car .5-.75 should be fine. I'd do .75 cubes sealed each a the motor displacement will bring you down some. I like larger sealed boxes, they tend to sound smoother to my ears.

Thanks for your reply. Would a 0.8 cubic ft. per chamber be too large? I found this ready made enclosure @ Sonicelectronix

Dual 10" Sealed Car Subwoofer 3/4" MDF Enclosure/Box 1.6 Cu Ft

Just came across this one and it should work well. Thanks again!

It should do fine in either of those boxes! Like previously stated though, it does shine in a ported box. Even if you don't listen to rap, porting it would be ideal. You can still achieve a flat response if you tune down to 30 hz.

Lowest string on a Bass guitar would be a Low E and that is about 41Hz. Port tuning the driver to 30Hz would still be 11Hz shy of the lowest string. Just curious, are you basing your calculations for a Ported box tuned around 30Hz on the Resonant Frequency (Fs) 26.2 Hz of the driver?

Interesting...This is what I got form the manufacture when asking for a recommendation for a port tuned enclosure for Dual Dayton 10" HF subwoofers for SQ in a car application.

"I would only recommend a sealed enclosure for this woofer, especially if you are going after SQ. A 1 cubic foot box will allow this to play into the upper 20's without a problem. If you are determined to use a ported enclosure I would recommend a 3" diameter, 15" long dual flared port for a tuning frequency of 25 Hz and F3 of 24 Hz."

You should always take opinions with a grain of salt here. Even if he has heard these subs before I doubt he's done much testing/comparison between sealed and vented enclosures. I would model it in WinISD and make the decision myself it were my project. Also if the manufacturer suggests sealed is ideal then go sealed and be done with it.

yep...Sealed 1cu ft enclosure per subwoofer it is! This is gonna be pure SQ goodness! NOW all I have to do is decide on a Digital amp under $300 to drive them @ 2 Ohms...
