Sealed downfire box in a truck...

I'm tossing around the idea of throwing a quick and dirty system in my extended cab ranger (1988).

I have two 10" Punch Z subs and a matching amp from a few years back.

To keep things simple and because my carpentry skills ****, just building a rectangular sealed box the width and length of the back section, about 4" off the floor with the subs firing down.

I'm thinking of the downfire route mainly to protect the cones, but I can then still store junk on the top of the box so space isn't totally wasted.

I already did the math, the airspace is perfect for those subs (.75 cu ft sealed).

Any problems with this idea before I begin? Any better, yet easy to build ideas? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Bump

Any input on this? Weather permitting I'm going to start working on it this weekend. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

your actually supposed to downfire in extended cab trucks... good idea lol try to get them as high off the floor as possible tho maybe 6" at least
realy, why is my truck louder with the sub up and the port into the jump seat??

to the OP, sounds like a good idea, i did the same in my truck a few years back. gives ya some room back and sounds pretty good. and its stealty too!

Thanks for the replies!

I got the box built over the weekend. No pics yet.

I need to get some carpet (going to try to find Ford 1980's blue to match). //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Only the top and sides are getting carpet, the bottom I sprayed with bedliner. (too complex to carpet around the "feet", etc..

Test fitting, it fits pretty good and as a plus it's very hard to get in and out so help protect it. (Both seats need to be completely forward, then hold your tounge at the corner of your mouth, make funny faces, and manuver the box in just at the right angle.) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Right now the amp is mounted on the bottom of the folded up jumpseat, but I think I'm going to incorporate a cargo shelf/amp rack in the top of the box to further stealth it.

Stay tuned for pics!

So I've still been too lazy to take any pictures (I can't find my dang card reader), but I finally have the box in the truck and my gains all set.

Holy hell is it loud. Then again, I've never done a system in a truck with the small airspace and the subs only inches behind my back. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'm kinda curious to know what it'll hit..

looking forward to some pics. Downfiring gives the subs a surface to load off of and makes it a good bit louder. I had mine upfiring for a bit and then made them in a downfiring position and certainly added some output. However I felt upfiring was a bit cleaner sounding.

Take some pics and post em up.

How much room is really needed under a downfired enclosure? Some say 3", some say 6", is there a specific amount that is better?
I don't really know, but I have about 5.5" (width of a 2x6) under mine. But there is a step at the back of the cab about that high, so the box sits on that step and has 2x6 "legs" on the front.
