Scoliosis

I have known about my scoliosis for a few years and usually doesnt bother me too much, but today my back is ****ing killing. The pain is intense today, I don't know if it is because the weather changed or what, but I want to know if anyone else on here has this problem and how they are dealing with it. I have to go to the store in a little bit to pick up a few things which I am absolutely dreading, but I was wondering if Icy Hot patches would help with the pain?

i feel ya man. i have sciatica which is no **** picnic either. shitty shitty shitty way to live for sure.

i dont know much about scoliosis, only that my gf's boss has it and you literally see the crookedness of her back. i believe she is going in for surguery because it has gotten so bad. sorry to hear about your back problems...they are no fun

Have you been to a doctor about it at all?

Surgery may be a possibility for you or at least some cortizone shots in your back to keep the inflammation down.

I have two herniated discs in my lower back which is consequently putting pressure on my sciatic nerve which gives me sometimes blinding pain in my left leg.

I'm currently doing physical therapy/exercise and taking an anti-inflammatory drug to help with the pain, and I can say that it makes a big difference, especially the drugs.

Ice/heat never did a whole lot for me until I combined it with exercise and pain killers, then it halped relax it a little. If I were you, I would go to a doctor and get some x-ray's/MRI's done to see how severe your scoliosis is and what can be done about it.

FYI, I had some chiropractor tell me that I had scoliosis a long time ago, and wanted $3500 to "treat" it, which involved seeing him 3 times a week for 3 months. He also said he wouldn't cure it, but that I could "live with it", and that I would have to see him once a month for eternity. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif Stay AWAY from chiropractors.

I went to a REAL doctor a few months later and it turned out that I just had the herniated discs. What a douchebag. After a few more months and some more therapy and exercise, I should be completely back to normal. I am MUCH better than what I started, thats for sure, and I don't need to go to a chiropractor monthly for an "adjustment".

You're going to want refrain from using ice for any period of time over 15-20 minutes as it tightens your muscles and could result in nothing but more pain. You need something with high Glucosamine Sulfate and MSM. Unlike most topical treatments (IcyHot, Bengay, Etc.), Glucosamine Sulfate/MSM goes deeper than just a layer of skin or two. It's not the cheapest stuff in the world, but it works..

Yeah I've been to the doctor a few times and had an x-ray done, thats how I figured out thats what I had. That has been a few years ago and the doc said if it got any worse I could have the surgery done, but they said there was only a 50% chance that it would help. Doc prescribed me some suped up Naproxen which does not help at all for any of the pains I have. I also have a ****ed up knee , I think they called it Osgood Schlawter (sp ???) or something. So I have a bone like thing sticking out from under my knee cap. That was pretty painful for some time, but after my back started bothering me, that pain could not compare to the back pain.

I have all kinds of problems, I am somewhat overweight (6'1 and 235lbs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif )which I have tried and tried to lose, but seems like its impossible, I have the ****ed up knee, ****ed up spine, I have extremely high blood pressure, and they dont know if its because I am always in alot of pain or what. Figured losing weight would help with all my problems, but I exercise for a little bit and my back starts killing me or i get light headed from the high blood pressure. I definitely need to get back to the doctors. I can't live my whole life like this and it will only get worse as I get older.

Depends which one you go to.

Most are there just to turn you into a repeat patient.

One other thing I should mention to anyone that has any of these "issues", do keep up with taking all your fatty acids, omega 3's, etc. They help decrease inflamation, its not everthing, but combined with excersize & whatever else you decide to do. They will help.

ive tried the exercises for my scaitica with no avail. the doctor said "just do these, take your anti-inflamatory, and youll be good to go"

ive been doing them and nothing. the pain has not subsided. im limited in my back movement, and i cant really bend down for anything unless i squat.

it started in my lower back at work and within 15 mins got to the point that i physically could not walk out of work to my gf's car to go to the doctor, then worked its way down my right leg.

its been almost 3 years since that incident and i have had about 3-4 total months of no pain which was directly after i was at the doctor. so basically for about 2.5 years ive been living in constant pain. whats worse is the doctor took xrays and said its just a strained back. then just a few months ago, which would make it about 2 years of constant pain at the present time, i went to the doctor again. she said, i have sciatica (which i already knew before i even went) and that i need to do those exercises. yes im sitting here, in pain still.

the pain makes me depressed constantly because i lose so much ability to do the things i want.

these are the reasons that i feel for the OP. good luck in getting better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Not all chiropractors are scam artists.

Osgood-Schlotter's disease (not a true disease) is essentially just inflammation of the patellar tendon when inserts into the tibia, cause from stretching during growth spurts, essentially. Usually symptomatic in the teens. Most common in taller males, although I'm only 5'10" and I had it. Treated just with NSAIDs (anti-inflammatories) like Advil, Aleve, or Tylenol for pain control. In other words, don't sweat it, you'll likely grow out of it. Seldom does it ever require anything else.

As for your scoliosis, you'll just need another spinal xray where they do that big long shot of your spine, they measure the angles between the curvature of your spine. Once it gets beyond a certain point, then they start talking surgery. If it's been a few years and they were talking about it already, and you haven't been able to go to physical therapy, you may be a better surgical candidate for it.

Everything else sounds likely related to pain.

Good luck.

I still have trouble bending down to pick stuff up. My therapist says I have about 40% of my forward-bending mobility. Not great, but better than the 20% I had before.

One thing that really helped with my leg pain was called "nerve flossing". What he had me do was sit upright on a table so my feet were off the ground. I took a sheet and propped up my lower back with it so I was sitting very upright. Grab the sheet with your hands and push down towards your legs so your back is supported. Then bend your leg at the knee as far as you can. Once you do that, back off a little bit (keeping your leg out still) and move your foot back and forth. Apparently I had scar tissue built up around the nerve and it was causing that leg pain. After I do that for about 10 minutes or so it begins to feel better.

I'm sorry that therapy hasn't worked out for you as much as it has for me. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Hopefully you find something that works for you.

Well, the two I visited were.

In fact, the only people to suggest it was something OTHER than scoliosis was my doctor.
