Which is better in terms of clearer, cleaner reception, a sat. ready head unit with a sat. tuner box or one of the self-contained units which is mounted in the vech. cab and uses the indash radio for fm transmission?

Anytime you go to FM for retransmission, the quality degrades. Best to hard-wire it, and retain the SQ of the source...

To add to that, definatly the FM ones will be worse then the other two. More then likely you will not hear a difference from the ones that are sat. radio ready and the ones that you run into your headunits aux. input.

i got the delphi plug n play xm and run it through the aux. inputs and it sounds great. the fm modulation doesn't sound terrible, but not as good as through the aux. inputs.

Direct wired or a specific unit for your head unit's aux in or cd-changer in spot. Don't go with the FM-Modulator.
