S/N ratio?

How much do I really need for a simple budget SQ build? And how does the S/N ratio from the HU and amp relate? For instance, would it be worth spending a little more for a HU with a 100db s/n if the amp has only 90? Or is it accumulative, say the HU adds distortion, and the amp adds even more, so they both need to be high as possible?

Ya that's what I usually go by, but is 94 going to be noticeable from 100?

to some people yes...others no...it depemds on the sound your looking for...but if you use usb or ipod...i doubt you'll hear the diffrence...in an original cd recording it would be noticable

Interesting. Anyone here a true audiophile? What's better for SQ? A phonograph with 100% accurate analog reproduction and low S/N, or a CD with a higher S/N?

@bob and slayer. Google it , there are 24k gold reprint/remasters of albums all over. the 24K backing on the cd instead of the standard reflective metal makes for smoother more accurate reading for the cd players laser and the original burners laser. More dynamic range less noise and less mistracking. Just because a song isnt "skipping" doesn't mean your laser isnt mistracking and correcting itself.

and yes slayer , on a real cd you will notice a difference between your pioneer and say a alpine , excelon , or eclipse with 100+ s/n ratio. And FYI , the rated s/n ratio on most every deck is for the cd player not other sources. Most other sources are way lower except for a few of the older SQ decks that allowed for optical input from a cd changer. It would actually yeild higher s/n ratio then the decks internal player.

probably not that big of a diff. i do know heavier vinyl and higher speed makes for a better sounding album. Like the new metallica remasters on 4 lp 45rpm sets. IMO they sound better than the cd. But i also have a pretty nice shure cartridge and stylus on a externally damped O/S kenwood TT that i used to have in the other room with extra long patch cables so i could crank it up with no platter rumble. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif So most any record sounds great.
