running one coil on a dvc sub

I blew my amp that pushed my 2 12s but I have a smaller one that does the job for one of them. it's 600rms @ 2, the subs are 600 rms d4s, I heard with running one coil it drops the rms by half.. so would it be safe to run one coil off each sub, wired to 2 ohms?

Thermal capacity is reduced to about 60-75% since the mass of the non-powered coil will still help dissipate heat. Running one coil will change the parameters, though. BL goes down, Qes goes up, etc... Your enclosure will no longer be optimal.

Better off to replace the amplifier when you get a chance.

I'd just run one sub.

If you are planning to run one coil of each sub:

You can try shorting the spare coils to themselves. In Layman's terms, they'll act as sort of a magnetic brake. It may improve sound quality. Worth a shot. If you don't like the difference, then change it back.

Just put a small jumper wire between the + and - of each spare coil.

they're prefab boxes anyways. not building a custom box until I get my sq hds 2.5 15s in the future when I have the electrical to support a better amp. I'm just talking for meantime

What subs do you have now? The HDS2 series may not be that big of an upgrade. I'd save up for one beefier sub and run at 1 ohm with a good amp after your electrical is up to par. Then, later on, buy another one of those subs and run at .5 ohms after adding more electrical upgrades. That's what I wish I would have done //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

Box is important. Not digging the prefab.

I know boxes are importAnt I'm just a very indecisive person. I change my system twice a week.. I wanna find a ssetup I really like before building an enclosure. I already have two sheets of 3/4 mdf. just waiting

I change my system often, but have never bought a prefab.

it's the last prefab I'll ever own, I also have a hard time deciding on a box. not sure if I want sealed or ported. haven't had sealed since my first pair of 12s and I only had it for a week before upgrading to a nicer ported.
