What does it mean to run your speakers active? Are there any benefits from doing this?

With an active set up all x-over duties are handled before sound reaches the speaker leads, to put it simply.

An active set-up allows a lot more flexibility. You'll need either a active capable head unit, an external active x-over or amps with very good x-over sections...

what are some examples of amps with good x-over sections?

Look for anything with a useable bandpass section for at least two of the channels. The Sundown 4ch and the JL 4ch Slash amps are both capable, IIRC...
