After talking to several people over AIM, I have to say that I have received a vast array of different answeres to these questions. I'm looking for some solid answers. This will be my first audio installation of any sort, so anything you type will be appreciated. By the way, I'm going for complete SPL.

My car:

2003 Altima COMPLETELY STOCK

I plan on getting a sub/amp, but people are telling me that if I'm stock that I should get a sub, amp, head unit, and speakers. I wish I had money for this, but I don't. Do I really have to get a new head unit? Or will my sub/amp connect easily to the stock head unit? Will they cooperate with the speakers?

I have $1000 to spend on this sub/amp combo. Currently I'm looking at 12" or 15" RE Audio XXX with a hifonics 2000W brutus amp. Do you approve? Should I look at TC sounds or adire audio brahmas instead?

That's the main 2. Thanks for your help and I apologize because I'm sure you see millions of these threads a day. Hopefully I'll be able to help the others out in the future!

to plug the amp in to your stock head unit, you need to get a line out converter, which can be purchased for less than $20. and with such loud subs you are gonna need to put some major money in your frontstage to keep up with the bass. and if you keep the stock head unit i would get a line driver to give you a more powerful signal for your amps.

Well... I stock head unit will work... just not as well. Speakers are not required, they will be nice though, because when your sub hits, you won't hear nearly anything from your speakers. It will connect easily to the stock head unit though, i've done it, no problems at all. Now, for the subwoofer, you could probably save some money from that 1k and buy a head unit. RE makes nice stuff, however, recently they have changed there company/how they do things. They are now a huge hastle to deal with, charge a lot for nearly everything, especially recones, and are just not a great company to chose at this point in time. I know FI makes some nice looking subs, however I've yet to read a review on them. TC makes nice subwoofers also, and have great customer service.

So, I guess I need to buy a whole system. That pretty much eliminates the possibility of getting an RE sub. Would a 15" brahma be a good alternative to a 15" XXX?

When you say complete SPL, are you talking about competing?
No. I just really want it to bump. I have no intentions of competing.

EDIT** After reading arsonbob's post, it sounds like TC sounds is a good place to start. The difference between a 15" XXX and a 15" TC Sounds will hopefully be enough to get speakers...

get an sql sub. youll thank this forum later for that. until you have actually heard a high end sql sub, such as the xxx or brahmas like you mentioned, you wont realize just how loud they are. thats just my opinion if your not going to compete

I feel what you're saying, but I really don't mind having bass louder than the music. If I want to enjoy the music more than the bass some day, I could just turn down the bass.

Although this is my first installation, I have many friends that have systems and my brother had a pretty good system, but I don't think it will be as loud as this.

just out of curiousity, and im not trying to bust your balls, have you heard a sub like the re xxx or si mag? i havent heard the new xxx but the mag off decent power gets loud enough to make your body feel uncomfortable(SPL) and sounds good doing it, really good (sq). but if you really want your striaght spl id go with the dd 99** as mentioned before

Hey man, I appreciate you being honest! I honestly have not heard an re xxx, but I can truthfully say I would like it. I would not drive around 24/7 super loud, not only because I can't afford the tickets, but because I enjoy music for lyrics and not ONLY bass. I am primarily looking for SPL though, and would choose it over SQ. Thanks for reccomending the dd 99**, I'll check em out!

EDIT** I really like the DD 99** series. How much do they run? Do I have to call for prices?
