rta/tuning questions

ok im gonna attempt to rta my speakers in a little bit

long story short - when rta'ing - is it better to run one frequency at a time compared to a sweep

and when you run a sweep is it better to run a real quick one (like 1 second) or is it better to run a long sweep (30 seconds - 1 min) ect..? the results are somewhat similar but i noticed if i run a slower one.. the response seems to be a bit smoother..

ok two more questions -

1) right now i got an omnidirectional mic - wasnt sure if that was the right one to choose instead of a unidirectional one... i figured it would be better since it might help pick up reflections when tuning.. so if this is incorrect plz let me know so i can exchange it =)

2) i have to do a general tune.. - timing cant be done right now- i dont the equipment for that (one day) so when positioning the mic - i figure it has to be in the middle

but is it better to aim the mic towards one speaker and tune it like that.. aim it upright... or forward.. ?

Omnidirectional mic will work fine.

  1. How I tune...

  • Use your Time Allignment set to correct locations (If applicable)Find your furthest speaker away from your location and mesure all others off that one. Do not adjust subwoofer.

[*]Use a lvl setting mesureme

  • Set your individual lvls based on Left and right speakers of same type. (L tweeter & R tweeter, L mid & R mid)Using pink noise or a tone to mesure each speaker individually and adjust your settings to make them match at the drivers seat.

[*]Tuning time

  • If you have a combined L & R EQTurn all speakers on and play your pink noise. EQ entire system as flat as possible. Note your high dips and peaks. Write down your mesurements/settings.Once you have a flat response start to adjust to your personal tastes. Again Write down your personal setting/mesurements

[*]If you have independant L & Right EQ

  • Turn all speakers off on one side. Play pink noise and tune flat responce. Write down your settings.
  • Repeat above with other speakersOnce you have flat responce, turn all speakers back on and tun to fit your personal tastes. You can do this independantly, but I find it works best if you switch back and forth between all on and each side on independantly.

[*]Listen to multiple styles of music as well as spoken words well recorded to determine if you need to go back above and readjust.
