My cheaper 25 year old Rockford Punch subs crumbled too over the years, still have some 8's and a 10 laying around that need surrounds.

In my case the only ones I have rotted are two 10w7s. I have 2 12" Kove Audio Armageddons that are old as dirt but the surrounds are still in great condition. May be that the JL surrounds are softer for better SQ hence the quicker deterioration

It's sad when my Jensen subs foam has outlasted the better brands I've had of the same vintage in the same environments

Is it one of those with the fat surround? Those looked great.

Yeah I got a pair of the fat surround Jensens 12’s (blue chrome cone) on clearance around 2000 – 2001, and a regular pair of XS 10’s in the late 90’s and both surrounds were good last time I seen them a while back.

I’ve had mixed results with what rots and what doesn’t. It’s weird because most of the subs I’ve had from the same time period in the same conditions and some are still fine 25 years later, even surrounds on my cheaper MA Audio subs. The couple Kove subs I've had had good surround too. I've definitely seen JL's rotted.

Have you considered replacing the surround yourself???. Place the speaker in a hole cut in a cardboard box. Remove the old surround, and source a new surround from Parts Express or another audio vendor. Use a pure silicone adhesive caulk to attach it, and use masking tape to hold it in place until it cures. I'm not sure how bad you want to keep the speakers, but this is one option. The repair won't be visible if covered by a speaker grill. Happy listening.
