i saying that just b/c you have a car that can go 200 mph that you don't drive it 200 mph all the time. similar with an amp, just b/c it is capable of 500 watts doesn't mean you have to crank it up. just turn your gains down.

what sub is it first off? some are a little conservative on their ratings.

Always go by rms on amps, subs, speakers etc. PAY NO ATTENTION TO MAX WATTS or what ever other sale scam they have.
