replacing tweeters, but NOT replacing speakers...

you can certainly replace drivers in pairs (left and right) and not upgrade everything. i built my own front stage with separate speaker purchases. i experiment with a variety of drivers. the kicker is that you need to make your own passive crossovers (or buy premade crossovers)

here is my $60 recommendation for replacement (better than OEM quality) tweeters and crossovers. mount them in place of factory tweeters, behind factory grills.

Tang Band 25-302SH 1" Shielded Neodymium Dome Tweeter 264-804

5 kHz High Pass 8 Ohm Crossover 266-474

when it comes time for replacement front woofers - you can use the Dayton RS series (4 ohm versions).

.

this is assuming you have a large factory grill and suitable mounting location. we cannot make a final recommendation until we know what vehicle we are working with (pics of the factory tweeter locations would help).

don't mean to revive a dead thread but i just saw there was a response to this.... here's what my situation is now (not my personal pics):

will this throw my sound off? having aftermarket tweeters and stock speakers i feel like it would make my music sound odd..
Generally, this is not a good idea because in a multi-driver system, even in stock factory system, the drivers and the crossovers were matched to work well together (hopefully). Now if you buy different tweeter, does it have the same impedance as the old? Does it have the same sentivity as the old? Does it have the same resonance frequency? Frequency response and distortion characteristics? All of these could throw the sound off.

You'll want to just clip the wires to those things. I've never ever heard a speaker in that location firing off the windshield sound good.

If you are only trying to complement your factory speakers it may make it sound a little better.

if you keep the levels of your tweets at the same levels as your factory speakers it may sound better with proper crossovers.

edit: misread the op

Just disconnect them. Those vans have 6.5/6.75" drivers in the door, right? That's good enough. Just mount the tweets from a comp set, if you get one and not coax's, on the pillars.
