Some amps come with a remote gain control and i was wondering can i use it as a volume knob for the bass as long as i dont go past were it is supposed to be set?

As long as it is a remote gain and not bass boost knob. Be careful how you use these knobs.

A remote bass boost just allows you to adjust the bass boost of your amp from the driver's seat instead of adjusting it where you mounted your amp. Personally, I leave bass boost off entirely on my amp so I have no need for one.

bass boost and remote gains should NOT be confused. Bass boost BOOSTS a particular frequency(BAD IDEA), remote gain actually controls the input voltage to the amp(not a GREAT idea either). Just set it and forget it. Messing with them USUALLY leads to trouble from what I've heard.

too much boost even WITH the gains set correctly can cause anything from blowing the amp, to blowing the subs.

Set your gains properly by any method you prefer... by ear, by voltage, by o-scope, etc... If I were you I would leave the bass boost at 0dB+ (off) and use the head-unit to equalize or use the head-unit to set your bass level.

How can you tell the difference if it just says bass remote?

if its bass remote its probably a bass boost controler.....it'll usually say remote gain if its a remote gain switch

They are good to have, but some people tend to abuse them. That is what causes blown subs and soforth. Me personally have only used in once and ended up blowing my sub.
