Regular Cab SQ Advice

Hey Gang

First post here. Ive built a 3 different systems over the years but am looking to make this one my best ever! Ive got a Mint 1990 Dodge Ram that I want to build a killer system for.

Due to limited space behind the seat Ive been kicking around the idea of going with an 8w7, but build the box so that it fires sideways, towards the door. Like a bass tube I suppose but scratch built. Maybe 2, firing in opposite directions, in seperate airspace.

The stock stereo consists of 6x9's in the doors & 5 1/4's in the back. There is a ton of space in the doors so I am thinking of going with an 8" midbass, then 6.5's & tweets, with active passovers.

For a setup like this I would need a 4 channel for mids & tweets, 2 for midbass & then a dedicated amp for the subs correct?

My questions are:

1. Will a box built like that work alright?

2. Whats a good headunit & components to use with Active x-overs? Ive never really concentrated on the front end before, just big bass out back!

Thanks

S.

when u say "active xovers" you do mean ones not coming with the speakers right? any deck is good for active xovers. and for your truck if your loookin for ultimate sq i'd go horns under dash 6x9 mids for midbass and a 10 or 12 for sub.

Sounds like you have quite a plan. There are a lot of ways to attack this. Are you looking for just an audio system? Or do you want video too? You could use two 4-channel amps. A lot of guys on DIYmobileaudio.com use Alpine components for HUs and processing. Many use the PDX amps too. One guy has two 4.150s, one on the mid range and tweets, and the other on his midbass and sub. Pretty simple, symmetrical 4-way active system. The H701 is a good processor as well. Zapco makes very good processors too.

Yeah active crossover.

The dual 4 channel amps sounds like a good setup! Im gonna check out that website.

I suppose if I did use 6x9's for the mids that the install would be that much easier... But can I get 6x9's that sound as good as quality 6.5's? I would really like to incorporate a proper mid bass driver in addition to the high end. The system in my other truck has 2 10's out back, 5 1/4's & 6x9's in the door. The 6x9's are alpines & have their own amp but I havent been that impressed...

I might have room for a 10" or 2 behind the seat, but I am NOT losing any legroom. I used to drive an s10 with 2 10's in a ported box & my knees were on the dash!
