Red top vs Yellow top

They are almost exactly the same.

Yellow:

Benefits and Applications:

* Dual-purpose

* Deep cycling and cranking power all packed into one battery.

* Longer life

* Lasts up to 2 times longer than traditional flat-plate batteries.

* More power in the initial 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds of the starting process than comparably rated conventional lead-acid batteries.

* Higher reserve capacity

* Constant performance quality, which keeps your battery running at the same level even as it's being discharged.

* Optimal starting power

* More power in the initial 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds of the starting process than comparably rated conventional lead-acid batteries.

* Longer shelf-life (lower self-discharge)

* Ideal for seasonal use, fully charged it can sit unused for up to 12 months at room temperature (or below) and still start a vehicle.

* Vibration resistance

* 15 times more resistant to vibration than traditional lead-acid batteries.

* Leak-proof

* Mountable in almost any position.

jman start your car, then take the pos+ cable off your batt. it's the coolest.

I have personal experience with the red and yellow tops.

The yellow tops I have....one in my daily driver. has worked great the whole time....dont do the key off much but havent had my batt die and not come back to life....good battery.

I have had 3 yellow tops in my show truck and they have all been crappy....a cell goes bad after being in there for any time period with the key off. I have had to have 3 of them pro-rated to get a new one.

I shifted over to a red top and havent had a single problem.

If your not going to use them to deep cycle....go with the red top. Better ESL/ESR rating....(charge, discharge)

I have been under the impression that the yellow top is a car audio battery....but that (I assume) is for the deep cycling properties. I like my amps not to starve when they are playing...and I dont have a bank of batteries so I run my car when I listen for any period of time with it loud.

If you want good batteries....Look Into Kineteik power cells....they are a good combo of battery and cap together.....much less parasitic than a cap....greater power discharge than a battery with the same CCA rating.

Batcap is another solution you could look into.

There is really no substitution to an excellent 200 to 300 amp alternator....that will solve 95 % of your charging/power supply problems. Short of running 3kw ++ of amp power...you need batteries regardless of what you do when you need huge current....bats can supply bursts of large current....alt can do what it can do....its all give and take.

imho

yellow tops act more as a capacitor and recharge faster then the reds, but the reds do have more cca's

^^^ That is one of the stupidest things I ever heard.

The yellow tops are deep cycles and can be drained and recharged with out incident. Like someone said, if you play you system with the car off, put a yellow top under your hood. I havent had any problems at all with my yellow top. I have killed a redtop though. Like 12volt said, You can also look into kinetiks. They make a lot bigger batteries than Optimas and are real solid batteries. The only thing you need to choose between the 2 is whether or not you will be draining the battery with the car off.

i have a redtop in my trunk. it completely fixed my voltage drops i used to get, even after having a 160a alt. and i dont have a big 3 upgrade, on my next car i will.

I don't know about my current set up but I know before I would play my system at the max I play it for about two hours and never had any trouble starting the car after. I think i'v had the yellow top in my honda for about 4 years now.

Basically there are two types of batteries; starting (cranking), and deep cycle (marine/golf cart). The starting battery (SLI- starting, lights, ignition) is designed to deliver quick bursts of energy (such as starting engines) and have a greater plate count. The plates will also be thinner and have somewhat different material composition. The deep cycle battery has less instant energy but greater long-term energy delivery. Deep cycle batteries have thicker plates and can survive a number of discharge cycles. Starting batteries should not be used for deep cycle applications. The so-called Dual Purpose Battery is only a compromise between the 2 types of batteries.

^what he said

Unless you play your system with the car off there isn't much reason to get a yellow top.

Red tops provide power quicker, and unless you have a very weak alternator and a powerful system, you should never be deep cycling your battery anyway.

Also, a deep cycle battery may be a way to prevent damaging your battery by routinely draining it, but it certainly isn't going to fix the problem, only alternator/big3 can do that.

In reality the difference is very minute and you probably won't notice anyway.
