Recone subs? I need your opinion :(

Well I was bored today so I decided to recone my XXX. Now, to cut to the chase, I need some opinions from some experienced guys.

Ive done a handful of recones but Im no expert.

Well, I cleaned up the basket, cleaned the gap, test fit the recone, shimmed it up tight, pulled it back out, laid down some glue, and dropped the recone back in and shimmed it.

Now, I shimmed it pretty **** tight, definitely tight enough, finished glueing it together, and then placed a mid on top of it for a minute while I waited to glue on the dust caps.

I cycled the suspension of the sub back and forth at this point and everything was perfect. I was very pleased, no rub, everything was great.

Then, I proceed to glue on the initial dust cap for the XXX, its the cap at the top of the coil former. At first I was a little leary about this cap, but proceeded to glue it on. I used a little bit of glue, but enough to hold it good. I was worried it might run down inside the former but I glued it on and everything seemed fine. Then I proceeded to glue on the boob cone and then I was done.

Well, I let it sit for a minute, I come back to push on the cone a little and make sure everythings still okay and guess what?

Somethings rubbing......//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

This is what I think happened, I think the glue for the top cap ran down inside the former and is at the top part of the former, right near the gap.

Obviously with this rub the sub sounds terrible, and initially I couldnt even move the cone, the glue must have started to dry, I pushed it a little and broke it loose. Then I free-aired it off a small amp to see what was going on.

I shot a vid incase anyone wants to see it.

Give me some opinions here guys, Im hoping I can drop this thing in, hook it up to the KX2500, and beat the crap out of it for a bit to heat it up and hopefully burn this glue off.

I dont want to wait another month and have to recone this sucker again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

And Im pretty **** sure its not the coil itself rubbing in the gap, it was fine initially and it doesnt sound like a coil rub would quite sound.

And 10-20hz cycles it almost sounds fine, but above that is when it gets real scratchy, which is what has lead me to my conclusion.

Let me know what you think, pics in a minute.

Play it.

Its probably glue on the inner part of the former, just like you said. It will probably wear away very quickly.

While the sub is moving (preferably freeair) somewhere around 1" p-p, press on the outer part of the cone... basically to make the coil rub on the former as it moves. When you find the REALLY scratchy part, keep in messing with it. Just press on it lightly here and there, right around where the most noise comes from. Chances are, it'll break off and you'll be as good as gold. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

and if not... Pull the dustcap, remove but save the inner one if possible, clean off the glue run with a dremel or something like it, blow the junk out with compressed air (a LOT), check for rubbing, re-dustcap it.

Cool man! Thats what I was hoping. Ive been messin with it trying to rub the glue off but I didnt want to mess with it too much yet.

Thanks for the help bro //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Either you aren't pushing it right, or you were too quick to jump the gun and pulled the shims out too fast...
You've really got to let that stuff sit quite a while.
Well thats the thing. I laid glue on the spider landing and surround then set the recone in and shimmed it. Pushed down firmly around the spider and surround. And came through with a little activator as I did so, put on some more glue, more activator once I was done.

Everything was shimmed fine and the glue was hard enough at that point that nothing was moving around at all. Period.

I set a mid on top for a little bit as I was waiting. And I pushed the cone up and down a little to make sure the gap was shimmed fine, which, it was.

It wasnt until after I glued on the initial dust cap that I ran into problems. Im confident it would have played just fine up to that point.

But after I got the caps glued on, I come back to check on it and I find that the cone is solid, wouldnt budge.

Immediately Im going wtf //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif

I push down a little and it broke free, immediately I thought there was glue in there. Just how it feels moving it up and down, and how it kept sticking and preventing the cone from moving any.

I played with it for a while so the glue wouldnt glue the coil in place or something, and after the glue in there dried up the cone still moves fine now. Except for the fact that there is still glue in there causing some rubbing.

At this point Im 95% sure glue is down in the gap, on the inside of the former, and thats whats causing the issue.

I know the gap was shimmed tight and it didnt move any after I pulled the shims.

-Sorry for typing up a **** bible, but its kinda hard to explain it all //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Thanks for any and all help guys

Na, not really.

He used IC-2000, which sets up pretty quick compared to most. I also see a nice little brown bottle of Zip Kicker (man that **** smells pretty! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif ) sitting there. The chance that the parts actually shifted is slim to none. He could have immediately pulled the shims and would have been fine.

When I cone a sub with CA, I always pull the shim just after setting the glue with a few sprays of activator. I do it all the time, always have, always will. I have NEVER had a set of parts shift to the side and cause any rubbing issues.

Now on the other hand, I've seen glue run down the inside of the former on countless RE subwoofers. Hell, I've had it happen to me probably 20+ times. lol

Im just more concerned at getting the dust cap off if it comes down too it.

Im gonna solder on the terminals tonight and hook it up so I can really mess around with it. I was just powering a coil at a time off a small plate amp last night.

Ill try pushing on the outer edge of the cone and see if I can get the glue to break off. If not Ill try pulling the dust cap off. Any tips if I get to that stage?

BTW Nick, if all else fails Ill be sending ya a pm to aquire about another recone.

Now that makes me feel better!!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

You dont need a recone. If you can't get the glue to wear away quickly (because it will eventually wear off no matter what! It's glue...being worn away at 20-80 full cyles a second!!) you can always pull the cap, affix the cone in an outward position, and take a dremel/file/etc and grind the glue off from the inside. Then just re-cap it.

You're never going to know until you just go solder it up and get to it. :p

If you do have to pull the cap - Just cut it directly in half, from edge to edge. Grab it in the center, work your fingers up to the edge, and start to peel it from the surround slowly. Just take your time. That glue doesnt stick to the Poly dustcap as well as you'd imagine. Ive taken off hundreds (maybe more? lol) of them. Its no biggie.

So as for now.... Play it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Sweet!! Your the man //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Thats what my inital plan was, I just wanted to hook it up to my KX and beat the snot out of it for a while, hopefully fixing the issue, and taking out some of my frustrations on it lol.

We'll see how it goes once I get to it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Thanks again for the advice guys.

Yeah that zip kicker is cool ****...use that on the rc cars and doing glass work

Dude i had some of that **** actually foam on me one time randomly..no clue how it happened...resulted in the same issue

And yeah..you late :p

How ya been dude?

In retrospect, you're the late one. I already had him fixed on up before you even woke up and posted. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
