recone advantages/disadvantages

i read the recone thread..great thread btw....but i still got a question.My buddy has a maw 15.(MAW 15 D4) w 3 in coils.500 rms.He blew it some how,sounds like broken glass inside sub.anyways,can we recone this with a more spl oriented sub and up the power handling and change the impedence of each coil?i guess we would be limited somewhat by the depth of the motor.if this is correct,how can we determine what we can upgrade to,if anything.thanks
