Is it strictly used as a measurement to help ensure you don't blow your speakers or is it also for sound quality?

Typically rated power is only a rating of how much power the speakers can handle (test tone continuous power) without being damaged by excessive heat. Some speakers will have a recommended range also and that is the ammount of power that is recommeded to get the best performance from them. Of course the install has a lot to do with this part.

My 12inch Sony can take 6500W daily for 15 min at a time.
