Rear View Camera Installation Trouble

Hey Guys, I'm installing a Kenwood CCD-2000 rear view camera in my SUV and found something strange. The reverse led, which should turn on the camera when the transmission is switched into reverse, works when disconnected from power. I followed the instructions and tracked down the back-up lights led...so, when the shifter is placed into reverse, the led has power. Then I tested the camera and found it was OFF! However, when I disconnected the reverse led, the camera turns on. Isn't this backwards? Can you think of any led in a 1999 Toyota Landcruiser that would have power when the ACC is on, but dead when shifted into reverse? Thanks!

OK, here's an update...

I confirmed I had connected the camera's reverse leed to the vehicle's back-up light switch and that the leed go's hot when the shifter is in reverse. However, the camera is still on all the time and turns off when I shift into reverse. Just for fun, I disconnected the camera's reverse leed wire and the camera stays on. So then I connected the leed directly to the battery...and nothing happens...it's still on! I thought the camera would turn off if it's reverse leed wire was supplied with 12 volts...but it didn't. Anyone have any idea how the reverse switch on these cameras work? Thanks again!
