rear view backup camera install - odd wire attached to rca

I'm about to install a backup camera. there are black and red wires where they attach to the rear lights. at the other end where the RCA plugs into the monitor there is a 3 INCH RED WIRE coming off the side of the RCA???? What is this wire for??? the only thing I can think of is if it might go to the reverse gear circuit - but I'm not sure why I would need this.

there are no instructions with the camera or manufacturer.

Not sure, but it could be an attachment for the reverse wire on the HU to trigger the backup video so you can run the RCA and that wire together...test to see if it gets 12v when you put it into reverse with the red(rear running light) is connected on the camera

yes you need to tell the HU when it is in reverse, it does that with a 12 volt trigger.

The headunit will have a wire that needs the 12 volts in order to then display the reverse video input.

Back up cams...for those with big truck who do not want to back over children.

I have had them on a few of my larger trucks and they are great.

a question to your responses.

my pioneer headunit already has a wire that will connect to the reverse gear signal. I assume this will tell the HU when the minivan is in reverse. So am I correct in assuming I don't need the red wire at the end of the camera's rca plug??

I'll get power for the camera off the reverse lights in the back of the van. And the head unit will know when the car is in reverse - does this make sense?

If you have reverse wire behind your dash already (as some newer trucks do have) then yes just use that.

The wire was added to the rca cable as many people get the reverse signal from the reverse bulbs in the rear and need to bring that to the headunit.

Sounds like you are all set and do not need to use the small wire
