Rear Fill Concept ??

To have or not to have?? That is the question. Humm... First of all this forum has been amazingly helpful to me and I thank everyone for all of this insight and info. Now about rear fill. I have seen alot of threads that say ditch the rear fill, and it being worthless. I have really wondered about all of that. To say that you cannot have good sq with rear fill is simply not true. Although I somewhat understand the concept, for me that hasn't been the case. I have designed my system for sq and am running rear fill. After alot of tweeking I do have a distinct front stage and good sound seperation throughout. Though rear fill may not be necessary, it has only inhanced my system //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif From what I have seen there some impressive sound systems on this fourm, and with that in mind, rear fill seems to be more subjective to the listener. I may not have the most impressive system around ( and I don't lol) to me and my friends that listen to it, my system does sound damm good. So rear fill isn't the boogie man it has been proclaimed to be. lol. Just a thought............

I run it and like it. I have 6x9's in the back and 5 1/4's in the front. I'm still working on the system but my front lacks midbass. I get some of that from the rears. Of course it messes up the stage a bit..but overall the sound is better.

Its louder with good rear speakers, but i wouldn't say the sound is better. I usually have my fader set 75% to the front. If you don't have components+amp, i wouldn't worry about it as much(sorry didn't read the post).

Unfortunately to most people, louder = sounds better.

I haven't had rear fill in my vehicle for the past....oh, probably 6 years, and I couldn't even imagine adding it back in again.

While I understand the thinking of not having rear fill (it's akin to 2 channel home audio -- why would you need rear speakers for stereo?), I'm still running it with albeit with fader 90% F and gains turned on low for the rear.

I do have to ask the SQ veterans here: why do I still see most (if not all) of the cars featured in car audio magazines having rear fill? What'st the trend been in competition circuit? To follow through, why am I not seeing any mention of active setup in features or competition. It seems so popular here but I don't ever see it publications.

Just because the speakers are installed for a show install doesn't mean they're turned on for the SQ trials //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I run rear fill, but its toned down alot so front end is dominant, midbass stays up front, vocals also,I just run 6.5 woofers,no tweets so sound is not drawn towards rear

Of course I cannot resist chiming in on this thread.....

I run rear fill and like it, too! To the point that I run dual component sets! (Want a real PITA for an afternoon? Work on getting imaging sorted out for rear component set tweeters. THAT'LL give you something to cuss about for awhile //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif ) I don't run the rears full tilt, mind you.

Maybe for me, anyway, it's a psychoacoustic type of thing. When I first got involved in aftermarket mobile audio the thing (for me and my buds at the time) was to get some kickass 6x9s, shove 'em in a rear deck, and amplify them. *shrug* I can't get away from wanting some sound coming out of the rear.......

So long as the owner of any specific setup is happy with it that's all that matters in the long run.

Bodega? Have you seen my latest response in the eXcelon vs. XXV-01d thread?

When you guys talk about having no rear fill, do you mean you physically remove the stock speakers or do you just run your fader all the way to the front.

Im gonna replace my comps in the front of my car and leave the stock speakers in the rear with the fader set about 70% to the front.

Is that a resonable way to go?

Not having rear fill can be either (i) not having rear speakers physically there or (ii) not powering rear speakers either by disconnecting their inputs or just fading them completly off. Basically you are only playing your frontstage speakers.

I feel that I have to run dome rear fill to bring the image that my sub produces further back into the sound stage.

I agree that this "you **** if you have rear fill" stigma that is present is sad. But for n00bs, it is a good way to get across that you need to spend much more on the front stage than the rear.

I have a 5.1 surround sound... not running e rear fills is almost the same as killing it. Still, Im only beginning to build my system. Kinda hard to look for coaxials for the rear fills that are as good as the front comps or at least wont be killing them. What do you guys use for the rear fills btw?

When you have great imaging up front and the soundstage is high etc it is really hard to tell that the front speakers are really in front of you, it sounds as if you have headphones on and if the bass is right it sounds like it is not in the back.

My current setup is not like this but I am counting on my next venture.

If you have average imaging which is very possible even with great comps/amp/doors deadened then the rear speakers can actually give the car that full sound, basically the rear speakers pick up slack for the poorly aligned fronts and this is why so many people say they like the way it sounds because it does sound better that way in some cars. But if you can get the fronts really sounding good then the rear fill just screws all that hard work up......but that is why we have a fader so you can have it both ways if you want.
