RE SE making scratching noises

It's a 12" SE, getting about 600 watts of clean power. Recently it's been making scratching sounds, lately it's become terribly apparent and is always present whenever music is playing. It sounds terrible.

Just pushing in on the cone makes the same scratching noise, so clearly the sub is effed in some manner. What is wrong with it? And what could have caused it? It's my friends, but I personally set the gains and it was never clipping.

Any chance something is stuck in the motor and grinding? Or is the coil coming apart? What are my repair options? I bought this thing used. :\

Can it even be bottomed?

I wasn't the original owner, but in my period of ownership, no it hasn't. I do remember when I first bought it, pushing the cone off-center would make the scratching noise, but push straight down and it was fine. I assumed thats okay since the cone only ever moves straight in and out, but that might have been an early warning sound. :\

Anyone ever re-coned an SE 12? I hear RE charges a ton, can I use someone elses re-cone kit?

so u had the sub out of the box pushing the cone up and down makes the scratching noise......time for a recone or upgrade.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
